Chinatown Street Scene

This photo was taken two weekends ago when I was in Chinatown to meet my friends for brunch. The street was especially busy because it was a couple of days before the Lunar New Year. After brunch, we went to see Mama Mia, the Broadway show that is based on songs by the Swedish pop group, ABBA.

So who is your favorite singer? Who have you been listening to lately?

Nice pic, Ming. I wish our Chinatown looked as lively. Love those street lights.

Interesting that there's only one political sign in view. ;-)

On my iPod: Bruce Springsteen. Love the Boss.

Except for the Hillary sign, I would have thought it was China.

Damn, I've had some good meals in NYC's Chinatown.

I saw Mama Mia years ago with my sister and her kids when my family was visiting the area at Christmas. Cheesy fun. In a way it's idiotic but it's so ebullient that it can win you over.

Listening to? This gets into the reason I chose my nom du blog. Michael Gordon's new CD Van Gogh, performed by the avant garde musical group Alarm Will Sound. I'm reading Alex Ross' excellent book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century and getting some of the works he talks about. Right now, that's Olivier Messiaen's etherial Quartet For the End of Time, written while he was in a Nazi prison camp.

I saw Mama Mia in London years ago, and enjoyed it!

Love the shot - the buzz, the colour, those wonderful iron staircases.

I've heard Mama Mia is great fun.

I'm listening to Rod Stewart singing The Great American Songbook. Nice easy music for early morning here...

What a busy photo, not the traffic, but there is so much to see! I don't think I've ever seen so many fire escapes on one street before.

Like in Paris, no specific Chinatown architecture, but the feeling is there!
Mama Mia still running? For how many years now?
No absolute favourite, enjoy many and will not establish the long list here!

Nice shot. It reminds me of China Town in San Francisco back in the 50s.

I really like this busy street scene. I've been meaning to go to Chinatown and take some photos. It's been so long since I've been there for dim sum. It must be lively there during the new year celebration! (Hope you liked Mama Mia, I hear it's a fun show!)

Timbaland's Apologize has caught my fancy as of late. How was Mamma Mia? Tom Snyder raved about it many years ago when he was hosting THE LATE LATE SHOW on CBS!

I love the busyness of your photo Ming. Visit any city in the world, and its Chinatown will always be abuzz with activity - from the foreign items hanging in shop front windows and their accompanying aromas, to the sights and sounds of Chinese massage therapists peddling their wares to passerbys, there's always something exciting to grab your attention.

I've been listening to a lot of "love" songs lately - still choosing wedding music! But my favourite bands are Muse, Maroon 5, Coldplay and Damien Rice.

That is a great shot....I haven't been to Chinatown in a while. Gotta remember to get down there.

I haven't seen Mama Mia, but I love the song Dancing Queen.

Lately I've been listening to Bryan Adams....old stuff.
