Is Spring Here Yet?

I took this photo yesterday at the promenade by the Rockefeller Center on 50th Street off of 5th Avenue. The weather was almost 60°F (15°C), which was probably the warmest day of the year so far. The greenery planted around the fountains gave a hint of Spring coming but we are expecting another cold front and snowy weather this weekend.

So are you ready for Spring? I am having Spring Fever!!

Unisphere Revisited

Here another photo of the Unisphere from a different angle in Flushing Meadows, Queens. This photo was taken last summer and I have to admit, my old simple camera did a great job on it.

So when was the last time you went out to take a photo?

Pugilicious

I saw this little fellow outside Murray Bagels on 23rd Street and 8th Avenue in Chelsea while his owner ran inside to get himself a bagel for breakfast. I had just finished my lox & cream cheese bagel before going to see my account to file my 2008 income tax.

So have you filed your taxes yet? It is due on April 15 but I did mine early.

Musical Quintet

Oh golly gee! I'm running out of photos to post (again). The freezing weather and busy schedule have left me little time to go out and take new photos so here is an old one from the archive. This musical quintet provided the 'Indian theme' music to the Ports 1961 fashion show last week.

So what kind of music do you listen to?

How Cold Was It Yesterday?

So how cold was it yesterday? It felt as cold as this photo. No, we didn't have snow yesterday but we had pretty strong gusty wind that bites. This photo was taken last month after we had a snow storm.

So do you prefer to be cold or hot?

Empire State Building

Here is another view of the Empire State Building as seen from 34th Street and 7th Avenue, outside the Macy's departmental store.

So have you been to the top of the Empire State Building or any really tall buildings?

Don't Let A Broken Foot Cramp Your Style

This guy didn't let a broken foot cramp his style while waiting for someone on the steps in front of Bryant Park. I loved the way he propped his crutches together to make a temporary rest for his foot.

So do you let anything or anyone cramp your style?

SoHo Graffiti

This interesting graffiti caught my eye as I walked down Mercer Street in SoHo last weekend. It rare to see Asian inspired theme in graffiti art but this one looks like it has an Asian face. There is a little bubble above his head with a heart in it. I wonder what that means.

So what are your plans for the weekend?

New York Fashion Week: The Editors

This photo was taken yesterday afternoon at the Ports 1961 show at Bryant Park. The woman with sunglasses on is none other than Anna Wintour, the most feared woman in all of NYC. She is the person who inspired the character in "The Devil Wears Prada".

So who were you most afraid of when you were younger?

New York Fashion Week: The Models

These two photos were taken minutes apart at the Anna Sui fashion show at Bryant Park yesterday evening. Both photos focused on different aspects of the show based on the camera's shutter speed. The top photo was taken at 1/50 second (higher shutter speed), which was perfect for the model who had a spotlight on her but not so great for the front row audience (low light). The bottom photo was taken at 1/30 second (lower shutter speed), which caused the model to look blurry and overexposed but perfect for the front row audience.

So which photo do you prefer? The focus on the model or the audience?

N.B.: I did another double-photo post a couple months ago using different ISO's.

New York Fashion Week: The Tent

This is the front door to the New York Fashion Week tents at Bryant Park. Inside the tents are four large showrooms with lots of spot lights, catwalks and pretty models. This is the final year the shows are being held here. Next season, it will move uptown to Lincoln Center.

So do you consider yourself a fashionable person?

Surgeon General's Warning

I saw this sign posted on the wall of one of the buildings in SoHo. It is a surgeon general's warning against cigarette smoking. However, there is no clinic or government building near the area. Most of the stores on the street are mostly art galleries and clothing boutiques. Also, it looked like an expensive copper plate so it is quite puzzling to see it there.

So have you seen anything odd lately?

Central Park Walk

This is the foot path leading to the Literary Walk from 5th Avenue. The naked trees will be sprouting leaves in the next month or so when Spring arrives. It will turn the landscape into a different color.

So where do you like to go for a walk?

Mid-Month Subway Theme

This is one of the subway entrances to the B, D, F, V and 7 trains at Bryant Park on 42nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. The white tents in the background are where the New York Fashion Week shows are being held this week.

This month, we have a new addition to our subway theme family. Please welcome Mo of Fresh Eyes on London.

This mid-month subway theme is shared by the following bloggers:

How Cold Was It?

I was at Bryant Park yesterday afternoon because it is New York Fashion Week. I saw this pretty young girl wrapped in layers because of the cold, windy weather. I asked if I may take her photo and she nodded.

So do you usually wear a hat and/or a scarf?

Sculpture inside Glass Garden

This gigantic structure by Jean Dubuffet is one of half a dozen pieces installed inside the glassed-in garden behind Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. The garden space include a cafe and lots of tables and chairs facing Madison Avenue. It is one of the few spaces in midtown Manhattan to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee.

So do you have a favorite place to enjoy your coffee?

N.B.: Thanks to Hélène of Taches et Couleurs for identifying the artist of this sculpture.

Hot Dog Vendor @ Central Park

We had a nice cool sunny weekend recently and everyone was out at Central Park. One of things to do when you go to Central Park is to eat a soft pretzel or a hot dog. And this vendor had a long line of people waiting to buy some hot dogs.

So do you like hot dogs, sausages and/or processed meats? I certainly do. :-)

Rockefeller Center @ Night

Even though this photo was taken last weekend, it still felt like Christmas to me because of the thousands of lights wrapped around the trees. The building in the photo is 30 Rockefeller Plaza or 30 Rock, which is now the title of a TV-series.

So what is your favorite TV show right now?

A Line of Orange Cups

This photo was taken on Sunday afternoon when the weather (finally) warmed up a little. The guys here were lining up to rollerblade around the orange cups and most of them made it without knocking over any of them.

So how good are you at rollerblading or rollerskating?

Midtown Grand Army Plaza

This photo was taken on Saturday afternoon at the Grand Army Plaza on 5th Avenue and 60th Street in midtown. I have posted a photo of this statue before but from a totally different angle. The snow on the ground is slowly melting away but you can still see them here.

So can you identify the all the flags at the Plaza Hotel on the right?

Daylight Moon

Even though it was only 5:30 PM last week, the moon was already out in full glory. This photo was taken on St. Mark's Place near 3rd Avenue in the East Village.

So how is the weather in your hometown?

Peep Show

These kids were peeking into the store window of the Virgin Megastore at Union Square yesterday. The video they are watching is a new comedy that has just been released on DVD. I think the advertising campaign for the DVD release is pretty brilliant.

No, I'm NOT GOING to ask if anyone of you have been to a peep show. So no question today.

NB: Sorry for the blurry photo. It was hard to focus when the temperature is below freezing outside.

Houston & Mercer

This beautiful building is located on the northeast corner of Houston and Mercer Street in SoHo. I took this photo because of the amazing details on the walls. They don't make them like this anymore.

So what are you plans for the weekend? The weather is supposed to warm up a bit in NYC so I hope to go out and take lots of photos. My archive is running a little low of photos.

No Horn Blowing

Impatient NYC drivers have a tendency to use their car horns excessively. There are several neighborhoods that have special ordinance against using the horn unnecessarily. I posted a street sign from East Village over a year ago and here is another one found in SoHo.

If I were the Mayor, I would institute a new city regulation that would charge driver $0.25/per honk after the first 10 honks each month. It will definitely help close the budget deficit we are facing right now.

If you were the Mayor, what would you do?

Ice Soccer

This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago when we had another snowstorm. I was walking to my local diner for brunch when I saw these guys playing soccer in the snow. The concrete park usually looks gray and depressing but the blanket of snow changed the entire scene.

So when was the last time you went out and play in the snow?

Snowflake on my Scarf

It snowed slightly on Friday afternoon as I was heading into the city and a perfect little snowflake fell on my scarf. I quickly took out my camera and carefully snapped a macro-shot of it. How beautiful is that snowflake? The other white spots are the not-so-perfect snowflakes.

So has any random incident of beauty happened in your life lately?

Flushing Chinese New Year Parade

The Chinese New Year parade in Flushing, Queens on Saturday included a dozen or so lions and even a dragon. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a good shot of the dragon as it danced past the crowds. Here is a collage of three lions from the parade.

So how was your weekend?
