Theme Photo: Sister Cities

According to the New York City government website, we have 10 sister cities around the world. They are Tokyo (inducted in 1960), Beijing (1980), Madrid (1982), Cairo (1982), Santo Domingo (1983), Rome (1992), Budapest (1992), Jerusalem (1993), London (2001), and Johannesburg (2003). The only sister city I have visited in the last year or so is Beijing, China. So here is a photo of the scene inside the Forbidden City from my trip there last July.

Ming in Beijing. Has a nice ring to it.
I think it interesting that cities have multiple sister cities. Do they get bored and find a new one? or do they just feel the need for more and add some? or do they fall out with each other and find a different one? It's like middle school romances i think. Well, NYC had great ones.... all 10! Your photo of Beijing is great. Bet that was a nice visit for you.

Hey! That's lucky that you got to go there yourself!

there's some really interesting places on that list of sister cities (I thought Sydney was doing well with six).

Wow, it's hard to believe Seattle has 23 sisters and NYC only 10. Seems backward, given the respective size and prominence of each city.

Were you there,Ming? I was there several days ago, and took plenty of photos of the forbidden city although I've been there for three times, I still need a map to find my way out...

This looks so good on the thumbnails: a picture of the Forbidden City with New York written under...made me smile.

You are one of the few to have actually visited a sister city. Lovely photo Ming. I envy you that trip. Not surprising that a city like NYC has so many sister cities.

Two great and powerful cities - and quite a collection for NEw York. I went to Beijing in 1978. It has changed considerably! (well unrecognisably)

ah, I've yet to visit Beijing, but would LOVE to. I've been to Shanghai and a few other cities in China, and I imagine the capital city is incredible.

Now that's just being plain greedy!
Excellent post, and a superb image to represent one of those many sister cities. Timely aswell re the Olympics.

I like Ming in Beijing too. ;)

So many people! It's great you got to post your own photo too — lucky you!

I do like your photo, Ming. I've never been to China, but would love to visit. One of my husband's reporters (well, ex-) was there for Olympics as his father still lives there.

I thought we had a lot of sister cities, but I thought NYC would have more than 10!

Hi Ming, Jilly told me you had posted Beijing so I thought I'd come and see! Pasadena has Beijing, too, but only Xicheng District of Beijing. I don't know why that is...

It's wonderful that you got to visit.

Ming, you are one of the very lucky ones among us to have actually made the shot of your featured sister city! That's so cool! Hanoi Daily Photo is also featuring Beijing today. Fun to see all the people touring the Forbidden City when you were there. Lucky guy!

I wonder why NY has so many sister cities? Do all the cities make visits to each other?
