Lights & Shadows

This photo shows a renovated parking complex (it was probably a warehouse before) across the street from Cinema Village on 12th Street between 5th Avenue and University Place. I was standing outside the small movie theater when I saw this interesting light-and-shadow image of the building. Also, the sky has this perfect blue that was just breathtaking.

No question today. Am having writer's block. :-)

Movie Shoot: Mr. Rebound

Movies are shot on New York City streets all the time. They create huge traffic problems for residents because streets are shut down for days to accommodate the crews and the set. However, the movie industry brings in thousands of jobs or income for the city.

This is the set for Catherine Zeta Jones' new movie called, Mr. Rebound that is being shot on West 11th Street between Greenwich and Washington in the West Village. [I asked one of the crew when I took this photo.] The cafe hidden behind the huge lighted screen is being used as a scene in the movie.

So what movies have you seen lately?

Crossing Delancy @ L.E.S.

A good friend of mine invited me to a free outdoor screening of the 1988 movie called, Crossing Delancey at the Lower East Side (L.E.S.) last night. The screening, sponsored by the Lower East Side Business Improvement District, was almost cancelled due to bad weather conditions but we stuck it out and the mild drizzling stopped about 5 minutes into the movie.

The photo above was taken a couple of minutes before the movie started and right before the rain drops began to fall. As you can see, the movie was projected against the side of a building next to a parking lot filled with chairs. The movie was excellent and the outdoor setting was exhilarating.

So how many of you have been to an outdoor screening of a movie?

The Namesake

Last year, I read an interesting collection of essays by award winning author, Jhumpur Lahiri called, Interpreter of Maladies. The author also wrote a wonderful novel called, The Namesake that was made into a movie earlier this year.

I saw the movie recently and loved it. The story revolves around a young Indian immigrant and his wife in New York City (in the early 1970's) and the subsequent struggles of their children as 1st generation Indian-Americans (in the 1990s) who had to reconcile their identities and culture in this country. If you want to watch a movie this weekend, this is a good one to see.
