My Fire Escape

This is the view I woke up to yesterday morning outside my bedroom window. What are you seeing is the fire escape from my apartment to the street down below. You can also see the fire escape for the building across the street (43rd Avenue) from me.

After a late lunch, I went to Central Park and took over 100 photos there but this initial shot taken first thing in the morning is the one I like best. I will post the Central Park photos (maybe) later this week.

So what did you have for lunch yesterday?

Brooklyn Bridge After A Snow Storm II

Apparently, we weren't the only crazy ones to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge during a snow storm on Friday afternoon. After having the right side of our faces frozen by the howling wind, we stopped in at Ferrara in Little Italy for some cappuccino (me), hot chocolate (Carl & Emeline) and cookies.

So what is your favorite way to stay warm during a cold winter's day?

Brooklyn Bridge After A Snow Storm

We had a huge snow storm on Friday morning and as a result, my office was closed. So a couple of out-of-town friends and I decided to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Why you ask? Because we could! This photo was taken as we got on the bridge from Brooklyn Heights. You can see the skyline of Manhattan in the background.

So what was the craziest thing you ever did during a snow storm?

Snow Day in the Morning

We are expecting another snow storm to hit New York City tonight and wake up to 2 - 4 inches of snow in the morning. I bet the kids are happy because there may be some school closings. Unfortunately, I will still have to be at work whether it snows or not.

If you don't have to go into the office today because of a snow storm, what would you do?

Freezing Mary

Here is another photo of the snow storm that hit New York City last Friday.

This photo was taken in front of a church in my neighborhood. I like the picture a lot because the statue of Mary, who was holding Jesus, looked like it was really cold. The blanket of snow in the background looked pristine and beautiful.

Snow Storm III

New York City received another dousing of winter storm yesterday, as did most of the northeast region of the country. This time around, however there were more sleet than snow falling from the sky. The ice pellets flying in the wind felt like a sand storm in the dessert.

This photo, taken yesterday, shows a gentleman using a snow plough to clean the sidewalk on the street. The cars parked on the curb will be covered with thick layers of snow soon.

Outside My Window: The Next Morning

This is what I woke up to on Wednesday morning. The snow continued to fall until late in the afternoon. By the evening, the snow had turned into ice, which made the roads slippery and dangerous for drivers. Some above ground trains were delayed due to circuit problems from icing on the tracks. Many schools and some businesses were closed early.

The snow storm was not all bad for New Yorkers. Some entrepreneurial youngsters were charging $10 to $15 per hour to clear snow from the sidewalks and driveways.

Why do private homeowners have to shovel snow from the public sidewalks, you ask? Well, there is a New York City law that requires private homeowners and businesses to clear snow from the sidewalks abutting their properties within a reasonable time or risk getting a $50 fine. In addition, the public sidewalks have to be properly cleared because homeowners can be liable for a slip and fall suit if it was established that the sidewalks were poorly maintained.

So what do you think of all these?

Outside My Window: Tuesday Night

We had our first major snow storm of the season last Tuesday night. Despite below freezing temperature for over two weeks, we have not had much precipitation until recently.

On Tuesday night, the snow began to fall. By Wednesday morning, most schools and some businesses were closed for the day. The amount of snow we received in New York City was nothing compared to upstate New York, where areas near Lake Ontario were the worst hit, receiving over 12 feet of snow and resulted in over a dozen deaths.

This photo taken on Tuesday night from my living room window shows the beginning of the snow storm. I had the camera sitting on the tripod set on top of the window ledge. Tomorrow, I will post a photo taken 10 hours later from the same position.

I hope everyone has a warm and enjoyable weekend
