Look Down The Atrium

This was the view down the central atrium of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). I was standing on the 6th floor looking down on the furniture exhibition on the 2nd floor (left) and 1st floor (bottom right).

So how is the weather in your city. It has been drizzling non-stop since Sunday.

Old Chairs

I am always fascinated at how some people can make old things, like these chairs, look so cool and appealing again. An artist friend of mine always managed to find interesting pieces of broken furniture left on the street, take them home and turn them into beautiful useable items in her apartment.

The last time I spotted something on the street, picked it up and put it in my pocket was when I found a beautiful, black, smooth river stone in Union Square.

Tree Chair @ ABC Carpet

ABC Carpet is a home furnishing store that specializes in imported furniture, antiques, one-of-a-kind pieces, as well as other home goods like carpets and rugs, electronic appliances, luxurious fabrics, and chinaware. The flagship store, located in two buildings on Broadway between 19th and 20th Street (Flatiron District), also has a couple of restaurants on its premises.

ABC Carpet was started by then newly arrived Austrian immigrant, Sam Weinrib, in 1879 on a pushcart selling used carpets and unusual fabrics at the Lower East Side of Manhattan. A century later, the family owned company has grown into one of the biggest and most diverse home furnishing retail outlets in New York City. Currently, there are numerous ABC Carpet outlets in New York, New Jersey and Florida, as well as in Harrods' in London.

The chair in the photo was carved out of a piece of tree truck and is an example of one-of-a-kind pieces available at ABC Carpet. The two doors to the left and right of the chair are the elevators. And no, the store was not undergoing renovation; this is how it was decorated. Notice the unadorned light fixture above the chair. Despite the organic look and simplicity, these pieces come with hefty price tags.

Tennis Soles?

The people at this cellular phone store in Queens have an ingenious way of protecting the hardwood floors from scratches. When I walked pass the store, I knew I had to take a photo of it. It's unique and brilliant, isn't it?

Queens is one of five boroughs (counties or parishes) that make up New York City. The other four boroughs are Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan is undoubtedly the most famous of the five boroughs and is the administrative seat of the city. A common misconception among non-New Yorkers it that Manhattan IS New York City. On the contrary, Manhattan constitutes less than 10% in terms of geography and 20% in terms of population of the city.
