Chicken or Eggs

This is a carton of freshly collected organic eggs from a small family farm in upstate New York. The eggs come from chicken that are raised in a free range environment and are fed natural products. These organic eggs are free of antiobiotics and are supposedly healthier and more nutritious than the regular commercially produced eggs. However, organic eggs do not come cheap. This carton cost about $2.50.

Notice the irregular size and interesting color variation on the eggs. They looked like eggs that have been dyed for an Easter egg hunt.

We get our eggs delivered by the milkman. I think they are what we call "free range" and cost about £1.20 [circa $2] for half a dozen.

I've always wondered if brown eggs really tasted different from white eggs. I only buy brown eggs cos for some reason, hubby prefers brown eggs. Brown eggs are cheaper than white eggs in Asian supermarkets, and white eggs are cheaper than brown eggs in western supermarkets. *strange*

Truly organic eggs will often have the male rooster's sperm in them and sometimes that will appear as a bloody spot and more but I don't want to spoil your post. Organic is better. We are all better if we get away from the people who retire on profits from our eating to survive. The pet food scare is a classic example of how food can be and has been contaminated by people who are intereted in the money (selling contaminated Wheat Gluten). Anyway. I do like your photograph as it does capture how "natural" eggs look. If the hens are running loose and eat onion scraps then the eggs will also taste like onions.

Contrary to popular belief, brown eggs aren't a healthier alternative to white eggs.

Hens with white feathers and white earlobes will lay white eggs, whereas hens with red feathers and matching-colored earlobes give us brown eggs.

And the latest studies show that eggs are really a healthy (and inexpensive) food choice, and do not raise your cholesterol as much as we were led to believe!

And, no, I do not work for the Egg Board ;-)

Free range chickens and eggs are the best. And the last time I ran about the garden for coloured eggs was over 20 years ago.

All my Easter egg hunting was done years ago. But I still do dye them now and again and eat them too, free-range and otherwise. I can't say I've noticed a difference in the taste in eggs but oh, the difference in chicken is marked.

I think the size and color variation is a good sign. Life itself isn’t uniform. (Unless, of course, it comes from an industrial food production process.) I agree that organic food usually isn’t cheap but those of us who can afford it should really be paying attention to what we eat. It goes without saying that food without antibiotics is a lot better.

Hey, Ming! saw you at RM's blog and decided to pay you a visit.My hubby's name is Ming and he's known as Ming the merciless ( in his graphic design and Marketing industry) too. you've got an interesting blog , looking at it, I kinda think you are somewhat a perfectionist like him. the only thing he eats raw are fruit and veges, though! oh.. when you cook, leave the windows open and light a couple of candles, it helps with removing cooking smells.
