Guggenheim Museum

I went to the Guggenheim Museum last Friday, which is located on 5th Avenue and 89th Street in the Upper East Side. The spectacular structure that houses the museum was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959 and today, it is still one of the most distinct and recognizable buildings in New York City.

The museum was undergoing an extensive exterior renovation so I was not able to get a good photo of the building because of the scaffoldings and wire nettings. However, I was able to take some great photos of the interior architecture. Photography of the art work was prohibited. In fact, we were allowed to use the camera in the lobby area only.

The permanent art collection at the Guggenheim Museum is fairly small compared to the other museums in New York City. It relies extensively on special exhibitions of selected works borrowed from other museums to attract its visitors.

Has anyone been to the New York City Guggenheim Museum? What do you think of it?

i went there at the end of December. The special exhibition was From El Greto to Piscasso. I like the form of special exhibition, coz you can see some great works gathered from all over the world.

Great shot Ming! Did they hold the NY premier of Spiderman 3 here?? I can just picture Toby McGuire in full costume "sticking" to the webbed glass ceiling, before plummeting onto the red spotlit carpet, only to emerge in a stunningly cut tuxedo..... ;o)

..saw it in 1965 at time of World Fair. This roof is a bit Victorian, isn't it. Nice shot.

Inside the coffee mug there is a nice little blue whale...you spotted his tale.

A nice photo and the narrative was great to read. I knew about Frank Lloyd Wright before and some of his work is classical. Some would say "most of it" but some isn't in my view.

I wanted to thank you for your visits to my blog. Thanks.

Grreeaaat Ming, I hoped you would have showed us this wonderful Museum. I'm so lucky to have had chance to visit it on March 1982 and few month later I visited Palazzo Venier in Venice too :-)

oh while the building is amazing, it's just about the worst place to see an exhibit. the lighting is terrible and the upward walking is exhausting! Lol.

tcho - The trick is to take the elevator to the 6th floor and walk down. That's what I did. :-)
