Maine Monument at Southwest Corner of Central Park

This is a photo of one of the statues at the base of the Maine Monument located at the south west entrance of Central Park. The monument, created by Italian sculptor Attilio Piccirilli in 1913, was commissioned by the city to honor the merchants who contributed to the success of New York City.

This area of New York City is called Columbus Circle, named after the explorer, Christopher Columbus. Lori of MissBinNYC has a spectacular night photo of the Columbus Circle monument.

I remember this well when we lived for a period of time on the Upper West Side! It's great to travel to NY without airfare!

Snap! I posted a statue too though I think I prefer yours. I like the colour of the material...is it stone and the fact it's not a Greek god!

I like the off centre framing opening up to the forward movement of the statue. It works well. Nice story around this monument!

Ming I hadn't visited for a few days so I've just gone back and commented on some of your many great pics!

Hi Ming! Thanks for mentioning my blog! Your photo is wonderful and I love the perspective. (It's so funny because I almost did a post today of the same statue, but the top part. Your photo is much better!) You always give such great information too!

I like this little chap, and I like the unusual angle you have taken in this photo. I'm learning a lot about interesting photos just by watching what other people post on their blogs.

I suggest you visit the the Central Park New York website and search for the Maine Monument.

The Maine Monument stands at the entrance to the Park at Merchants' Gate, named by the Commissioners of Central Park in 1862 to honor commerce and business professions for their important contribution to New York City.

The photo is of a monument which was commissioned to commemorate the sinking of the USS Maine, 1898 Havana, Cuba.
