Ming Goes to Washington

I was in Washington DC for work earlier this week and managed to take some great photos of the subway system there. Even though these photos are not of New York City, I hope you would allow me the opportunity to post the photos from my trip.

The subway system in Washington DC is spotlessly clean and absolutely gorgeous. The design of the platforms and tunnels in the waiting area look like a futuristic movie set. And like the Paris Metro, there are electronic billboards announcing the wait time for the next available trains. Unfortunately, the subway lines there cover only a limited area and shut down after midnight.

Do you have a rapid transport system or subway in your city?

My sister lives in DC. I always tell her I envy their Metro, but she shrugs and says, "I prefer the NYC subway. It ain't pretty, but it does the job. The Metro is constantly delayed, barely goes anywhere and breaks down every other day."

It IS gorgeous, though!

No rapid transit here...we do well to have "The Bus". Your pictures are wonderful....doesn't matter where they were taken.

wow that is soo beautiful.

i think any subway system aside from nyc's is a lot cleaner and advanced. in korea, they're somewhat bigger and you can get cellphone and tv signals. i think at the moment they're hooking up wifi so you'll be able to go online anywhere. also the one's in tokyo are a lot cleaner than the nyc ones as well.

how does does a fare in dc cost?

The fares were $1.20 during off-peak within DC to $2.20 during rush-hour. It was weird for me because I didn't know how much fare to buy so I bought $5 worth each time.

These are wonderful...Is that the subway coming in the top right photo (pinkish dot on my computer)?

Truly splendid, especially for a subway system, wow. I wish there were a cummuter train from west Michigan to east Michigan. It would get a lot of use. I doubt it will ever happen.

They are all interesting photographs. I wonder if this is typical or just those your were in?

I just discovered a earlier that two baby robins have left the nest. Or one is still there. I have photographed those and will show them on Monday.

This is amazing. There's something about it that bring M C Escher to mind.

First of all my opinion is that your Washington photos are and will be very welcomed ! Then, yes, we have underground in Torino (it's quite new too) and you gave me a good idea: to take a photo of it :-)

I love the way the platform lights in the floor flash as the DC train arrives...

There's no rapid transport here, other than our cars, of course.
The D.C. subway system is a marvel.

Great photos! Really like how you put them together.

The DC Metro is nice (though I have to agree with teahouse's sister in that the reliability and range leave much to be desired), and I like the design even though one could say that since all the stations have the same design, they're a little boring.

If you haven't seen them yet, check out photos of the Moscow subway. Those are the most beautiful and amazing I've ever seen, though I hear the ones in places like Budapest are similar. I can recommend this website which has gorgeous panoramas (I've inserted a line break between the / and Metro):

I believe they were from the first stop in Virginia. Not quite sure.

I guess Virginia isn't really DC. :-)
