MoMA: Richard Serra at the Sculpture Garden

This is a macro shot of Intersection II (1992-3), a gigantic structure by Richard Serra at the MoMA sculpture garden. It is made up of four identical bands of steel, each weighing 30 tons and measuring 13' high x 53' long and 2 1/8' thick. The structure is arranged in two parentheses formation like this: (( )).

Here is another shot of the Intersection II (below right) taken from inside the MoMA building. The other structure on the upper left is also by Richard Serra called, Torqued Ellipse IV.

Here is a link to more photos of the Intersection II on flickr.com by different photographers. They did a better job of capturing the image of the structure than I did.

Very interesting sculpture. Reminds me of one we have one in Birzebbuga, Malta, to commemorate a summit in Malta. Must get Dina to get a photo of it.

I'll have to get over there and photograph it myself since a commenter tipped me off that there's free admission in May with a certain Bank card!

mmm.... I like the macro shot, you caught the texture very well. Even that, i don't like it very much as an art work... I guess modern art is sometimes very weird to me...

They did a better job at capturing the sculpture than you because it was winter! We're not going to complain that spring is here, are we?

Now seriously Ming, what do you think of that sculpture? Apart from its monumental size, what has it got going for it? Sometimes I feel that in modern art big is supposed to be beautiful full stop. Not sure it's always enough.

Like Dsole, I like the macro shot because that's where you express your own creativity

Dsole & Natalie - I didn't find the structure very beautiful but I do love the texture and color of the surface. I took a lot of macro shots of the surface but only two shots the entire structure.

You girls are very perceptive.

Wow! I've been «inside» Serra's sculptures at the Guggen Bilbao (The Snake and four Torqued Ellipses; some people get disoriented and somehow lost there, but it was quite an experience... I wonder whether one of the Ellipses travelled to the States; that would have been another achievement, transporting all those tons... It seems Intersection II is just 100 tons!

Ming - when were these sculptures installed? I took a photo of a courtyard at MoMA on my visit to NYC in 2005, and have compared my photo to yours, and it looks like the same courtyard, apart from the absence of the sculptures in my photo.

All the trees appear in the same position, as well as the little ponds! Or are there multiple, similar-looking courtyards at MoMA. I can't remember.

I'll post my photo to my blog - have a look and let me know what you think!

Belinda - I think the installation is new. The exhibition is set to officially open in June.

Here are a link to some picture of the installation.

Is that rust on the steel ? :O
Art or natural phenomenon?

It reminds me the sculpture we had in "Jardins des Tuileries" in Paris, a few years ago...It was quite the same shape..I was lucky to see him working when he spent some time in France and it's amazing...
Thanks for the macro shot...
