This is my neighbor, Jules. She is a sweetheart despite her size and has the calmest demeanor I have ever seen in a dog. Jules is a St. Bernard and was rescued from the pound a couple years ago after she was abandoned by her original owner. Today she lives in my apartment building with her new owner and is loved by everyone who meets her on the street.
Here is another photo of Jules. You will appreciate her size from this photo.
Jules and my other neighbor Spike never fail to make me smile every time I see them even if I had bad day. I don't know what it is but they always make me go goo-goo-gaa-gaa over them. My voice rises and I start to make weird noises and say unintelligible words to them. Most importantly, my worries miraculously disappear...for at least a couple of minutes or so.
What or who makes you smile every time you see it/him/her?

This looks like a St. Bernard dog...one of my favorites! Lucky you to have him/her as a neighbor!
Cute dogs do the same thing to me...but what really makes me smile are my grandchildren.
un superbe chien, il est tres beau, mais en appartement ?
a superb dog, it is very beautiful, but in apartment?
Olivier - Yes, it is a BIG dog. I think that is the reason she was sent to the pound by the original owner. Most people don't realize how big St. Bernards get and then give them up when they take up too much space in a small apartment.
Ming, your lovely photos of Jules and Spike got us going goo goo gaa gaa too!
Seeing my girls when I pick them up from school always brings a smile to my face. My husband has that effect on me too.
Wonderful dog. Your photo makes you feel like you can just reach out and touch her. The photo has such details. As for your question, my family and my dogs make me smile.
Can't believe that people just abandon their pets. And I imagine the St. Bernard even has a "non-mutt" lineage, as there are not so many of them, AFAIK. I agree with you, they probably got the puppy and didn't anticipate how large she would grow to be. Anyway, yay for your lovely neighbor who adopted her! Though, I share the same concern as Olivier, who wonders about such a large dog in (presumably) a small NY apartment.
This summer, I'm hoping to get out to visit the monastery where the St. Bernards originate.
Re your question: our cats. Actually, almost all cats and dogs.
Yes, a bit big for a flat, but the St.Bernards are so kind! How could you ever abandon it (or any dog)?
What makes me smile...?
Three things.
1.) The sight of my sweetheart does it everytime. (Luv ya babe!)
2.) My blue merle 'Shetland Sheepdog' named Huxley.
3.) And Darwin, my blond Australian Shephard. He's been with me for 14 years now.
I'm a firm believer that dogs absolutely make their owners healthier by lowering blood pressure and relieving stress on a routine basis. As a long term dog worshipper, I have no doubt that they play a major role in my daily quality of life.
adorable....
Jules and Spike looks adorable!
Great photos!
Asking your question, my daughter and my son and also Flora,(my dog) make me smile.
Hi Ming
She's beutiful. I am surprised your neighbour is able to keep her. In Australia, you would be battling the Body Corporate (the owners of the unit block) to keep such a large animal on the premises.
Ming, it sounds like you need a dog...
I know you'll tell me that you are busy and you live in a small place. My answer: get a small dog! And it would be best if you can sneak home for lunch to walk him (I used to do that for years!). If not, there are always friends, relatives, neighbors or hired help to do it.
And I assure you - it's all worth it! Your smiles will multiply ;-)
Jules is quite the looker, she must turn heads all the time. I have Simba and Oso, who make me smile and lighten my day.
Jules (and Spike) are adorable.
Babies and watching animals at play make me smile.
Jules and Spike are too cute and adorable. It used to be my sweet dogs in Singapore that make me smile and chase my blues away. Now every time I look at my baby daughter, all my worries, blues, frustrations whatever ... just disappeared. She's such a little sunshine.
You sure have some great neighbours, Ming. Love Jules and Spike. I love it when people give a shelter dog a home. Lucky dog.
What makes me smile? My dog! Well, he makes me fall about with laughter actually. He's a Bruno de Jura (Swiss hunting dog) and you can see a photo of him at:

Handsome girl!
I wanna hug this puppy!
Woof!
My doggie makes me smile, too!
What a beautiful dog. Great photo. As far as what makes me smile......
my children (and husband). I love to see my children in the morning. When they walk down the stairs with their sleepy eyes and bedhead hair.... I love it.
Life in general makes me smile. Life is good.
Thanks for the fun post.
awwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
hoo'sh a kute lil doggy?
My Wendydog makes me smile, but she also gives me a little pang of sadness cos she'll be 13 in a couple of months, and is well into her old age, and won't be with us for many more years. Jules is lovely, all slobber and fun.
My doggie used to make me smile too but he's not with me in the US now :(
Oh this one is much more better to have even in small apartment compare to Pitbull, in here we've BIG problem with Pitbull as happened often they bites kids...I don't know if it called same in English
what a gorgeous dog, wonderful expression! 40 three year olds in an english lesson makes me smile!
What a cute dog!!!
We have the same dog...and they are just wonderfull...
awwww...so sweet... I've only seen a St. Bernard here in Switzerland once! I thought I'd be seeing them more often. Guess I have to go to NY then. Dogs and cats both make me smile. Dogs more so than cats...
