Lamps at Union Square

Dozens of lamps like this one light up Union Square after the sun goes down. I thought they were interesting and beautiful and I'm glad the city is keep them instead of installing newer ones. But I don't think these are very "green" or efficient.

So what do you do to be more "green"?

I traded in my SUV (I'd driven SUVs for 15 years!) for a Mini Cooper. Now instead of filling the tank every 5 days or so, I fill it every 3-4 weeks or so.

I bag my own groceries and cram as many as I can into a bag, saving at least a few paper bags/plastic bags each time.

don't ask for unnecessary bags! they're such a waste.

As you know, I walk and/or ride the bus every day, back and forth to work. I get off on the way home to grocery shop, stashing things into my rolling black suitcase and my tote bag. Most all of the time, I walk the rest of the way home.

I love street lamps - will keep an eye out for these ones!

I switch off all my power at the points; hang my laundry on a line outside; use power saving light bulbs; have shorter showers....I'd like to drive a hybrid, but they're a bit out of my price range.

Well, they do have those screw-in energy saving fluorescent bulbs that might fit. Can you imagine the electric bill the city pays? How about the amount of human waste generated in the city each 24 hours? Where does all that "stuff" go?

To be more green...?

We bought a second, used, gas-saving car.

There is a strict all-power off when leaving the house each day.

We live in a very warm climate and require A/C; however, we now selectively cool only the rooms of the house that we occupy at differing times of the day and night. For example, at night...we only cool the bedroom.

I wish we had bike-paths here, but alas, this part of the country is awash is mega-sized SUV's and Pickups. Just the other day I saw a little old lady attempt to park her monster-sized pickup truck. It had four doors, a large, loud, gas motor (V10..I believe). After parking the thing, she delicately climbed down from the vehicle and went about her merry way. I noticed the Lic. plates indicated that she drove a considerable distance to attend college classes each day. I would bet, that energy conservation for her is only a 'policital issue' and not taken seriously. Some people will only change when absolutely forced to change by exorbitant prices, legislation, or similar actions.

Have a wonderful day in NYC! I'm so jealous sometimes.

About 15 years ago, our town put new street lights along Main Street. Huge, bright, and very close together. Main Street looks like a landing strip for a jumbo jet. It must cost a fortune to run them every night. No wonder my taxes are so high!
Me? I shop with reusable bags. I drive a small enonomical car. I ride my bike. I shop at second hand clothes shops. I don't buy pre-prepared frozen food very often. I compost all my veggie waste. I recycle glass, cans, paper, cardboard.

I've replaced all of my incandescent light bulbs with high-efficiency fluorescents! I read somewhere that doing that with the lights in your house saves the equivalent of a car's yearly CO2 emissions!!

Eat more vegetables so that chlorophyll can infuse into my blood and make me "green". *kidding*

The lamps look like ice-cream!
