I posted a photo of a manhole cover on Saturday and incidentally, Eliane of NYC posted a great interpretation of it on her blog. Over the weekend, I found this manhole cover doormat at the Posman Books at the Grand Central Station. Apparently, manhole covers are quite the thing in NYC. Who would have guessed?Do you have a doormat outside your house? What does it say?

Oh gosh, this is really cute! Sillyporeans don't use doormats because most of them live in high-rise apartments. There's no front porch or garden outside of the apartment.

The thing you probably never thought of, is the doormat your show a picture of probably costs a lot more than those made out of iron that fit the manholes in our city. At one time there were a lot of companies who made these things and competition was keen. They were cheap and did not have built in aging.
Well now, that's different Ming. I love manhole covers. We have some beautiful covers in the villages here - but very small, enough for a hosepipe I suppose.
No, I've no doormat but when it rains, then sheets and towels get spread around on the terrace in an attempt to keep the dogs - and me - clean and dry.
Well, this manhole looks a lot cleaner than the real thing. ;-)

I made a post a couple of weeks (months) ago of some sculptures in the Bercy Park here in Paris. The artist had used prints from manholes all over the world to make sculptures representing different nationalities. New York was represented!
I new your first post on manhole covers would open a can of worms! I'm gonna see if I can find a good one to take here in Cheltenham,UK, to post. I think this door mat is cool. My doormat says "wipe your feet" on it!

That's an excellent doormat. Like the fun aspect of it. I've seen it on a artsy/funky online store before and was that close to buy it. That was before my very simple and boring doormat got stolen! Unfreakingbelievable.
my doormat has no words on it. it is illiterate so it prefers not to have any words on it.
hmm contrary to photolicious, i used to live in a Spore HDB, and all my neighbours have doormats. maybe we are the door mat people. haha....

Thanks for the Flat Henry memory. I was calling this little guy Flat Christopher until I re-read his letter to us, so I went back to Flat Stanley. I'm going to miss the little guy when he's gone back to Mississippi.
