Rockefeller Christmas Tree

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was unveiled on Wednesday night to great funfair and excitement. According to news reports, the 8 tons, 60-year old, 84 feet tall Norway spruce was decorated with 5 miles or 30,000 pieces of energy-efficient lights called light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs use up to 60% less energy than regular light bulbs. In addition, the tree will be recycled as lumber for Habitat for Humanity after the Christmas season is over.

So what are you plans for this weekend?

Nice looking tree and decorations. Your pic looks better to me than the "professional" ones (couldn't see a thing, anyway, they are way too small for my screen). It's great that the tree will be recycled that way.

A to you Q: I'm going to freeze my butt!

Now this always is a landmark Christmas tree site to see. At times I envy you New Yorkers.

Beautiful!! I love that they do this every year. And I'm glad that they're being more earth-friendly about it this year.

It reminds me, it's about time for me to put up my Christmas tree!

How do you spell M A G N I F I C E N T? Does anyone know how many lights are on that tree? Thank you for showing us. How about some mulled wine to repay the kindness :)

Massive!

Seems that this year, many trees round the whole are using LEDs.

What am I doing this weekend? Sat it will be catching up on all the DP blogs I have missed for the whole month!

Sun, taking part in some Writers Festival thingy :-)

The Christmas tree of all Christmas trees! Glad they use a lot of lights. Most public trees don't have enough.

You reminded me to get on over there sometime this weekend. I've always wanted to go to the Sea Grill and have dinner under the lights. Maybe this year I'll make it.

btw....another great photo!

WOW!! That is one beautiful Christmas tree!! No wonder there was so much excitement over it. And great to hear about the energy efficient lights and recycling plans post festive season. I think Nathan and I will have to have a Christmas in New York one of these days - it's just the freezing cold that scares me :o(

Very nice. You know, I just realized that besides last year when I had guests for Christmas, I never go around that area to see the tree. Me bad.

The tree is indeed a sight... but wouldn't it be more beautiful if it were alive?

I know i'm not the first to suggest this, but why not plant a live tree there and decorate it every year rather than chopping down a new 60-year-old tree every year?

With some planning, they could even transplant an older tree rather than start with a sapling.

New Yorkers could then enjoy the beauty and environmental benefits of a big tree like that all year round!
