Korean Dumplings (Mandoo) Bar

This photo was taken at Mandoo Bar, a Korean dumpling restaurant in Koreatown on 32nd Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue. The dumplings are filled with a variety of meats and vegetables, including kimchi (fermented/pickled cabbage). I am a huge fan of Korean food and kimchi is an acquired taste for me.

So what taste have your acquired?

Those look so duh-lish! I had never heard of kimchi until I read a story in my English class last semister. I believe I read it is a homemade delicacy.

I can tell you a taste I have not acquired yet and it would be seafood. I've tried endless times to eat shrimp and lobster, I just can't seem to get beyond the "fishy" taste.

Did you eat at the restaurant that day? Looks yummy!

Wow, those look yummy! I love any kind of dumpling. Sometimes Korean food is a bit spicy for my taste but I like it though. I guess that's my acquired taste!

my dad loved getting roast duck from flushing and i used to think it tasted horrible and would cringe when he ate it. soon after i fell in love with them and he'd buy me my own order of duck when he came home haha.

Well, good taste, of course -:)

Sauerkraut is one thing I enjoy now, but sure didn't as a kid. I've grown fond of yogurt, too, and that was an acquired taste about the age of 40. Microbrew beers ... again about the same age, didn't like beer at all before that.

Mmmm, they look good! I confess having a bit of a dumpling addiction right now. The boiled kind.

Acquired taste: Mochi (rice cakes) and Udon noodles. First, it was just too much chewy stuff in my mouth. I got used to it and love it now. One of my favorite mochi today is: toasted(?), cheese and kimchi on top, wrapped in seaweed. Yumm. Kimchi and cheese is a perfect match. Really!

Fermented is being nice, Ming. The old Korean War vets referred to it at, "rotten." But then we have made cabbage here at home and that has a distinctive smell too but it is something I love.

Nice photography.

I enjoy seeing all the sights and tastes of New York, and here's another one! So different from anything down my way.

Hi Ming...I love dumplings as well...but I'm a southern girl and we eat chicken and dumplings..have you ever had them southern style? You drop dumplings into a nice boiling chicken broth..they puff up nice and fluffy! So delicious.. I've never worked at acquiring a taste for something...if I don't like the taste I push it aside and never try again...:) good post!

Super photo, Ming. Not sure I would want to try fermented cabbage tho although I do like normal pickled cabbage so why not?

I seem to go through periods of wanting 'must have' foods - at the moment I don't feel as if I've had a meal if it doesn't include pasta. Tortellini I adore.

Great shot; those look wonderful. Guess I'll have to go out and find some dumplings today.

Oh yum, Korean food! I love it! My son spent some time in Korea and loved kimchi. There was a Korean BBQ restaurant here in town last year, we ate there a couple of times and cooked meat and veg right at the table... really tasty and lots of fun! Sadly, the restaurant closed. Perhaps not enough people aquired the taste for it???

Peanut butter, bagels and donuts are some of these acquired tastes for me. Pop corn, I refuse to acquire: just the smell makes me a little sick.

Love your picture. This is a nice scene to watch. I bet they were super fast.

After years of drinking coffee with sugar, I've finally acquired a taste for the unsweetened variety.

mmmm. korean dumplings beat all other dumplings.

I think for me, yogurt and olives are an acquired taste. I hated them when I was little, but now I love them.
