Deutsche Haus

This block of historically landmarked buildings, just south of Union Square, is known as the Deutsche House. According to its website, it is a New York University (NYU) institution dedicated to fostering German-American and international understanding.

What's interesting about this block is that it really stands out among the high rise buildings and retail shopping strips surrounding it.

So have you been to Germany?

I went to Germany In 2005 for a wedding.
It was one of the most beautiful ones I ever participated because it was between a French (the husband)and a German (the wife):
The mix of the french and the German cultures made this week end unforgottable.

Hi Ming! Back home and profiting from the Portugal’s Day holiday, I’m trying to catch up your posts.
This looks quite familiar, but I thought it was «Washington Mews», where my friend Ron (son of a German lady) lived for a while...
Yes, I've been to Germany...
Loved to see the West Village rooftop views
Finally, Schiller's is ok, but tofu, only once a while... ;)
Thanks also for your comments at Blogtrotter, which has now landed in Santiago de Compostela, Spain!
Hope you enjoy, and have a nice rest of the week!

I love successful neighborhood preservation like this, even if they are just offices now. Thanks for presenting a wide shot like this; it makes such an impact to see the contrast.

He he, I have been to Germany a few times. Though, not as many times as you might imagine given that we live within 30 minutes from its southern border. Stupid paperwork issues... Anyway, most recently we were in Munich for a weekend and it was beautiful!

Yes, I've been to Leipsiz and Dresden!

And I believe that block was featured in the end of the movie "The Family Man." When Nicolas Cage goes to visit Tea Leoni, his college girlfriend.

That was such a beautiful place (still is...HEH).

I grew up just across the border from Germany. And France. I'm so old, I even saw the wall in Berlin.

Yep, been to Germany several times.

I don't know which one is the Deutsche House but the first one (behind you on the right) is La Maison Française (or something like that). Basically NYU French Department. Would be interesting to check if the other houses relate to other languages, who knows?

Oh! Forgot to answer the question: I've just been inside the Frankfurt airport for a few hours between planes. A very nice airport. 8^)

Ming...I love this photo...the reds, taupes and cream colors all blend beautifully. Love the old streets...Never been to Germany, but one of my closest friends is from there. In the past we have been to some amazing German restaurants...loud and fun...while dining, we would get up and march around the room singing :) sit down and eat a while longer and up again we would go....marching and singing...a fun time :)

I haven't been there, but Elliot's parents were from Germany and Elliot is in Belgium this weekend, which is just west of Germany.

I've passed by that street many times, but had no idea of it's history.
