And God Created Adam

I saw this mural depicting one of Leonardo da Vinci's work, The Creation of Adam on the side of a building on Lafayette near Bond Street in Nolita (North of Little Italy) last weekend. The interesting thing about this mural is that both Adam and God were drawn as black men here.

The original painting (a fresco) was drawn on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City. I believe I saw the real painting when my parents took me to Italy when I was about 10 years old. I even tossed a couple of Italian liras into the Trevi Fountain in Rome hoping one day to go back to the city again.

So tell me, in which city did you have your best vacation?

Ming, Ming, Ming! Too hard of a question! But thank you for reminding me of how many wonderful places I've been. 8^) Was Cracow better than Budapest? Was Venice better than Florence? Was Truro better than Santa Barbara? Was San Francisco better than London? Was Christmas better spent in Hana, Hawaii or Stege, Denmark?

That's what you call name dropping. ;^)

A beautiful mural. Darker faces make sense, considering that it's the Middle East. A blonde and blue-eyed Jesus always struck me as strange...

My best city vacation would be New York. Maybe it's aIso because I didn't expect falling in love like I did, to be honest. I was smitten instantly. There were many nice places but NY gets first place.

I guess you are allowed to take photos of this one; not of the original (but some do of course do anyhow)!

Rome is definitely on my list of nice cities, but I would be happy to return to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) for its particular atmosphere!

Oh wow! Now that is wall art. Always wondered though, why Adam was painted with a belly button. He's the first man he wouldn't have one not being born of a woman. I know I have a quirky way at looking at life!

My concept of «vacation» doesn't fit in a city; but you know my favourites: NYC, Sydney, Stockholm, Paris, Lisbon, London, Rome... As for «vacation» I can't forget my islands (many) and a Kenyan safari... ;))

I'm back Ming.

Nice art.

Never been to Italy, but hope to visit someday.

It's a real toss up between NYC and Paris. Love both cities for vacation and would love to spend a year in each, living the life. Well, it's a great fantasy!

Enjoy my NY experience through the terrific pictures on your blog.

Interesting painting Ming...I prefer great masterpieces be left alone...perhaps the artist would have better served us all to have produced an original....hmmmmm

My favorite vacation city....Charleston South Carolina...hope to visit there soon...I love old southern history.

Nice Post today :)

What a tough question! I keep returning to Paris and Italy (both places I've also lived). Just can't stay away. But best vacation ever was a summer spent in Hawaii; I was 11 and my best friend had moved there. It wasn't so built up then -- truly a paradise.
As for the saying "New York is a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there" -- I feel just the opposite (but maybe that's because I live there)!

I like this take on a classic. Best holiday? To many to choose from! They are all good for different reasons :)

Oh, dear. . . . .First, what a great mural! I have seen the original, also, but I didn't toss coins in Trevi. :-)

We have had some wonderful adventures in cities, and I can think of reasons why I liked each one (with the exception of Belize City. . .SORRY!). However, the BESTBESTBEST place we've visited is BARCELONA. (And, you have to say it correctly. . . .Remember the Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode when Newman skips down the street and says, "Jam-ba-LAY-a!"? It's the same thing here: "Bar-the-LO-na!" [Don't forget the Castillian "th" sound!]) ;-D

When I saw the Sistine Chapel most of it was filthy from candle smoke and so everyone looked black! But they were in the process of cleaning it that trip and you could see the clean parts were gonna be magnificent when completed...

Surely, they are done by now...

I'm a lover of big cities - Paris, Rome, New York, Barcelona are a few favourites, and will return over and over,.

BTW, Michelangelo Buonarotti might be turning in his grave having his work ascribed to leonardo! (As great an artist as Leonardo was, I think Michelangelo's ego was pretty healthy!)

Opps the daisy, did I attribute tv original work to the wrong artist?

Thanks for the correction, Sally.
