To-may-toes, To-ma-toes

These tomatoes were sold at the Green Market in Union Square yesterday. I have never seen that many varieties of tomatoes in my life. There were big ones and small ones, purple ones and white ones, round ones and not-so-round ones, cute ones and ugly ones.

I have to admit, tomatoes are an acquired taste for me. When I was a kid, I hated raw tomatoes. Now it is one of my favorite things in a salad.

So what food items did you acquire a taste for recently?

Cut up some tomatoes (red or yellow), a few leaves of fresh basil, a few thin slices of red onion, sprinkle some Italian seasoning and drizzle with a little oil and balsamic vinegar and toss. Serve fresh or chilled. Quite refreshing.

:) Yes, tomatoes are not only tasty but are becoming a color coordinated food item.

Recently, there had been no new tastes, but chili, guacamole on first taste were abhorrent to me and now?! :) I love both.

Tea. Before it was like "I drink coffee you drink tea my dear...", now, after my recent trip to London I discovered how GOOD and COMFORTING tea is, any time of the day. And I think how it "clicked" all of a sudden? Why I didn't understand it before???!?

Amazing photo...
Nice display really. I have never seen purple tomatoes either. And the yellow ones too, I thought they were prunes.

Sorry, I have a doubt for the word "prunes". Better to say PLUMS?

That's a terrific picture, Ming. I love tomatoes, in fact I can sit right down in the garden next to a tomato plant and eat them right off the vine, warmed by the sun, mmmmm.
I grew some red and yellow tomnatoes this year, lots of fruit but not enough time to get them all ripe so I'll have to ripen them on the kitchen windowsill.

Fabulous - like a Tomato Tapestry!

I abhored tomato sauce - eating pasta only with butter and parmesan cheese - until I was pregnant with my daughter. Now, I love a good tomato sauce!

When I was a kid growing up in Illinois, I used to eat tomato sandwiches all summer long. Just bread, butter, and tomatoes with some salt and pepper. Ah...if I could only find tomatoes that tasted just like that! These look like they might come close.

I wish we had as much variety. It's so difficult to find lovely tomatoes for salads, and cherry tomatoes. I honestly think we only have one variety available here!

Okra! I still hate the slimy texture, but I'm beginning to like the taste.

You're makin' my mouth water. I only sorta liked tomatoes until I started shopping at the farmers' markets. Now I can't get enough and I look for new ways to eat them. Favorite: caprese salad. Or just sliced with salt, pepper and vinaigrette. Yum.

X Rated. A French vodka with blood orange and guava I think. You sip it over crushed ice. It took me about 15 seconds to acquire a taste for it. oooolala

PS The ugly tomatoes are usually Heirloom tomatoes.

Mussels, I've recently got into eating mussels with tomato sauce lately.

Ugly tomatoes? Aw, go on Ming, what does an ugly tomato look like?

I have recently developed a taste for bitter things, go figure!

great photo. Some of them look magenta, some orange. How strange?

Tomato-a-rama! What an amazing selection!

Orange and purple tomatoes, how strange. The colours are so vibrant. Can't think of anything I've developed a taste for lately. I've been put on a strict diet so there are a lot of things I miss because I can't eat them.

Chimoyas. As you may know, its a fruit from Mexico and parts south. Its got a vanilla flavor with a custard-like consistency. Very tasty.

Here in LA, they're not cheap (sometimes $6 per fruit) and I'm not sure they make up to the East very often.

I think most of my tastes are acquired ... but some things are 180 degrees from my childhood likes: beets, cheese, beer, wine, coffee, peas, tofu, yogurt and I suspect many others that don't come readily to mind. Some items on this list were "shun when possible" well into adulthood.

I do so like this tomato shot. I like all the sizes and colors in one photograph :)

I love tomatoes, always have, and my favorite way to eat them is with a bit of salt. When I was a kid it was with sugar.

Tomatoes.... I hated them as a kid too and now love 'em with mozzarella and balsamic vinaigrette

What a lovely shot of all the colors. Juicy, acidic tomatoes are definitely a plus.
