East Village Painter

I got off the bus at 3rd Avenue and 8th Street last weekend and saw this guy painting a picture of the Cooper Union Building in the East Village. The painter patiently applied his strokes to the canvas despite the freezing cold temperature and breezy wind outdoors. I snapped a half dozen photos and ran inside a Starbucks to get a warm cup of Caramel Macchiato.

So what do you like to drink when it's cold outside?

Oh Ming, I don't speak "Starbucks" so I have no clue what you were swilling. I like hot spiced tea or really cold white wine or champagne. Oopss for a minute I thought I was back in Paris! :)

PS
Bravo to the painter out there in the freezing cold trying to paint. That's amazing.

It's a wonder he could paint in such weather.

quand il fait froid, un bon vin chaud, cela remonte et redonne de la force. ton peintre est en effet très courageux de peindre sous cette température.
when it is cold, a good hot wine, it takes back up and gives again force. your painter is in effect very audacious to paint under this temperature.

I love street artists like that one! There are great ones that unfortunately are not recognized! The city where I found many amazing street painting artists was in Paris, in the Montmartre area!
Love your pictures!

Such a nice scene. I think this artist must be a happy guy as he's using so much colour. the painting is so vibrant.

I'll join you in a Caramel Macchiato Ming - and then another.

Over and over your photo's stir up so many questions for me...like who is he and why is he painting in the cold. Will he hope to sell it? What inspired him to paint it? Was there really someone riding a bike like in the painting? Where he is set up...is that a parking area? Is that his car in the front of him? Does he need a permit to do this?

Brr, not bad in this cold.

Tea, hot chocolate (I recommend the one from PQ - really good).

It's funny isn't it? What's driving this man is the same thing that drives me as a photographer to get out of my toasty bed at midnight, to take photos of a passing storm when I have to be up at 5am the next morning!
