Men's Bags

Lately, I have been following The Sartorialist, a daily photo blog by fashion photographer, Scott Schuman. The photos on his blog are absolutely amazing. So as an ode to Mr. Schuman and The Sartorialist, I decided to post a photo on men's fashion today.

Men in New York City carry bags!! Oh yes, we do. We carry all kinds of bags -- computer bags, messenger bags,
gym bags, backpacks, briefcases, European carry-alls (as Seinfeld called it), etc. We carry bags because we have to tote everything we need for the day when we leave the apartment. And since most of us commute on buses and trains, we do not have the luxury of temporary storage in the trunk of a car.

The type of bag a New Yorker carries largely depends on his fashion aesthetic. The hip and fashionable yuppie may prefer a Jack Spade messenger bag. while the conservative business executive may carry a Tumi computer case. The college student usually carries a backpack and the retiree, a PBS logo canvas bag. It is as much a statement about your personal style as it is what you need to carry in it.

So what kind of bag do you guys carry?

I alternate between a Samsonite backpack and a Crumpler backpack.

Other times, I prefer not to carry a bag, but nowadays I carry a small crumpler camera bag around, so I can have a camera to snap pictures for DP :-)

I carry a Manhattan Portage messenger bag in brown. :-) And I carry my itsy bitsy Canon camera in it.

Just got a tripod for Christmas from my brother and am anxious to test it out.

Are you going to lug the tripod daily? hehe...

Well, it's a really compact and light tripod, but NO, I don't intent to lug it around town. :-)

Usually something big enough to hold a SLR or a small rangefinder? Usually a Timbuk2 messenger bag....and it's not a man purse ;)

I like the ghost guy on the right.

dsole - do you carry a woman's purse along with your regular bag?

pcfranchina - I love Timbuk2 bags too. Very, very New Yorker!!

zeezee - Yeah, The Sartorialist is too cool for words.

carol - Me too! The slow shutter effect is amazing. But I find that the ghostly figure needs a stationary, clear figure as contrast. Otherwise, it just look like a badly focused picture. :-)

moi personnellement, j'ai un sac à dos avec mon appareil photo et mon trepied.

olivier - The photo was taken in front a subway station on 59th Street & Lexington Avenue. The stairs lead down to the subway station. The blue hue is due to the clear sky.

I'm no big city girl, but I carry 1) a backpack for my laptop, 2) a big office purse (big enough for folios), 3) and a book tote for books, lunch and my camera. Whew! Good thing I just walk from the parking ramp next door to my office.

I think men are sexy with bags, like my husband who carried one of the European carry-alls when we lived in Istanbul. Now he carries my purse in the store . . . NOT.

Man-bags? Just this past Fall07 semester, I began to notice that it is fashionable for college guys in Louisiana to carry shoulder bags. They seem to be a cross between the bookpack and a purse.

Don't tell him I said this, but my husband LOVES bags - that is, backpacks, camera packs/cases, briefcases, you name it - even fanny packs! His office is full of them. And he wants me to get a new backpack because mine is too old. That's it - just too old!

What? My closet? Half the purses there, Mom bought and decided she didn't like them so she gave them to me. I didn't buy them. Oh, hold on... this is how you hold the top purse so you can close the door...
