Washington Square Hotel

This is a photo of the Washington Square Hotel, which is located on Waverly Place in the Greenwich Village near New York University (NYU). I stayed at this hotel when I came to New York City for my first job interview right out of graduate school. The company I was interviewing with flew me up here (from Louisiana) and put me up at this hotel for the weekend before my Monday interview because the airfare was cheaper with a Saturday night layover.

I got that job and moved to New York City in August 1998. This means that I have been in New York City for almost 9 years. So am I considered a New Yorker? According to Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & the City, anyone who has been in New York City for 5 years is a New Yorker. So I guess I am.

Tell me about your first job after you finished school.

Will try tomorrow. There are two Apple stores in NYC. I assume it's the Apple Cube on 5th Avenue.

Do you want me to pick up an iPhone for you? :-)

The APPLE store on the 5th avenue is really splendid, with this cube of glass in front. For my first job, Ben it is that which I still have ;O)

Hey Mr New York...I love photos of hotels, even though I've been looking at them endlessly recently!

I studied journalism at uni, so my first "real" job was a part-time position with a travel industry magazine. I only stayed there about five months though. That was 10 years ago. Funny thing is, I ended up working for the same company six years later - different owners, different position and only stayed nine months. Guess it wasn't meant to be :o(

What do you do?

I guess we are all newyorkers, or would like to be! A place to love! (Paris is quite OK also.)

Hey, Ming! This looks like a cosy hotel. What was it like inside? (then and now) How much does it cost to stay here?

My first(and only) job out of college was as a Medical Ass't/secretary to a Cardiovascular Surgeon-one women office. I did everything from billing to taking ekgs. It was a great job-I learned a lot, and my boss treated me like family. I worked 15 years with him until he retired and I got married-which happenned at the same time! I continue to see him and his wife every few years.

wow My first job out of school was in Dallas Texas, I did a nurse internship program thru all the critical care areas of the hospital. It was an experience to say the least! Is the otel you stayed in very nice? I am planning a trip to NYC in a couple of years and your photos are such a help in determining where and what I want to do and see. Thanks!

My first job was in a German company with a great boss who showed me a money god in his office. I didn't even know it was a money god then and thought at that time this boss of mine is rather weird to ask me for some change all of the sudden and putting them underneath it. :)

Beautiful Hotel! Love that facade!

My first journalism job was as a reporter and writing at a daily newspaper in São Paulo city, where I was born and raised.

Maybe NYC is different, but I've been in the city where I am for more than 5 years now but I don't consider myself one of "them". :)

BTW I LOVE your New York photos. I've never been to New York but it's somewhere that I dream of.

Interesting story Ming!
My first job was just for get some money to make a train-trip across France Belgium and Netherland. Now I have my first serious job as it's something related with that I've studied (Biochemistry), and it's only 15 minutes by car from my house or 30-40 by bus... I'm happy even I work until late and days are quite short for me now!

And I guess Carrie was right, she always do! ;)
What a great serie. I loved Sex and the city! Miranda was my fav.

The guy's name is Greg Packer. He's first in line for iPhone in New York City at Apple Store Fifth Avenue near Central Park.

The iPhone can only currently work in US :-(

This hotel has had its ups and downs for sure. When I first came to NYC in the late seventies, it was an all male SRO (single room occupancy) paid for by NY welfare. Before that it was a little bit of a "one night cheap hotel", as T.S. Elliot would have put it. In Joan Baez's song about the early days with Bob Dylan in the early 1960s she refers to this hotel as "that crummy hotel over Washington Square."
