This is a public fire alarm pole from the bygone era. There is one on almost every block in my neighborhood but I don't think they work anymore. Most new apartment buildings have either sprinkler systems and/or indoor fire alarms.

"The holy grail! We have found it," one dog to the other. "And it's not buried underneath a church. You first,I insist." ;-)
Love these old relics of yesteryear...a lot of character. I wonder how often it is tested.
Coltrane - You are sooo right! I think the poles are now used primarily for the dogs' entertainment. :-)
cela doit être une pièce de musée. elle est superbe
that must be a museum piece. it is superb
Haha... I want to laugh when you mention dog's entertainment. LOL
I love all these old pieces still hanging around the city :) It's so nice to see them. Where I live, there is still an existing old loo down the street. It is a circular form. :)
I love how you're (your shadow at least) in the photo as well!
I didn't see this shot before you left for your trip! Love the shadow of you on the sidewalk! Have a great trip!
I love how you're *sticking out of the manhole* ^-^ .
You should test whether this fire alarm still works or not...for the blog, you know!
(Saying *hi* from Tokyo. I have been reading your blog for months now. Excellent and interesting work!)
