Steam & Taxi

I thought this was a perfect New York City scene because of the steam coming off the pipe from beneath the street and the yellow cab driving by. The steam is a result of warm air from the underground shafts meeting the cold air above ground. The pipe was installed to help reduce pressure build-up underground, which can cause the manhole covers to explode up in the air and create serious damages.

No question today.

bravo et bien vu cette photo, avec un peu d'imagination, on pourrait penser que c'est un taxi a vapeur. Voila comment résoudre le problème de l'énergie ;o)

I don't think I've seen that around here even though the steam can be really thick at times...

Wonderful NYC shot, indeed!

They are mostly cable wires, transformers and other electrical systems underground. You will notice that there are very few or no overhead wires on the city streets.

Every summer, the cables and transformers underground will catch fire from overheating and cause blackouts to different neighborhoods.

Those underground steam pipes can be very dangerous.... They are soooo old.

You just answered my question about summer blackouts.

BTW. . .I'll email you privately. . .still trying to decide about coming up there. . . .

You can't forget the Lion People that live beneath the streets. :-)

Hey, I've given you an award. You can read about it on my Wailea Daily Photo blog. Cheers!

ah, but *I* have a question for you . . . is that the Limelight (used to be a club, I think it's closed down now) behind the taxi? 6th Ave somewhere in the 20's?!

(I like to pretend that I still know something about the city!!!)

Hi Ming, here I am trying to recapture your last posts on my weekly visit… ;)
The Soho Savoy must be a nice alternative for the London, since the latter is closed for renovation... ;))
The sunset is brilliant! Filipino food: I think I had it only in Manila. The Lion, I've seen it so many times, but never captured it this way; great shot! And last, but not the least, the steam taxi is gorgeous!
Thanks for your comments at Blogtrotter. I’m still strolling around the streets of Sofia, there.
Have a great weekend!

Wow that looks amazing and so New York. I was really hoping to get there this year but don't think I'll be able to. The fella and I want to go there together but I was looking at flights and hotels and just don't think we will be able to afford it as we would like to spend a week there, so I can get over the jet lag and we would both really explore the city.

Anyway hope you are well. Whats the weather like there? I personally can't wait for spring to get here!

That photo is so NYC!

I live near Con Edison headquarters and there seems to be one manhole on our block with is always spouting steam.

But don't they use steam to warm up apartments?

Nice shot. Especially with the old LimeLite in the background!
