French Baguettes @ Vesuvio Bakery

These loaves of french baguettes were among the many offerings at Vesuvio Bakery in SoHo. I did not appreciate (nor enjoy) crusty bread like these until I was an adult because I grew up on those pillowy soft white bread, otherwise known as Wonderbread from the supermarket. Now I love these crusty baguettes as well as other breads like olive loaves and focaccia.

So do you like bread? What are you favorite kinds of bread or starch?

I love bread, including a good freshly baked warm crisp outside soft inside baguette :)

Aack! With "Wonderbread" you wonder why it's even allowed to be called bread. But alas, I, too, fit in the same mold as you and only came to appreciate real bread as an adult. These loaves look delicious.

As a kid, I remember peeling the skin off a slice of Wonderbread, then rolling the rest of it into a wad of gray dough to eat. "Builds strong bodies twelve ways" they said.

What I eat now? Whole wheat bagels. Hard to post that to a New Yorker, since bagels are practically a point of religion among you folks. But there it is.

Supermarket bread just don't cut it with me. I eat it because my wife buys it but I would much rather, like you, eat bread with crusts so hard and chewy that one bite pulls out my partial plate.

My favourite is of course the baguette, bought at my local bakery, only a few meters (yards) away! ... especially when it's still warm!

Love a good crusty bread and good cheese (Humboldt Fog, Manchego, Port Salut, Drunken Goat are just a few that come to mind) or a good chunk of cold butter.

My absolute favorite, though, is a good San Francisco sour dough. Nothing better in the world!

And now I'm hungry... Off to find some bread and cheese...

Oh yes, having grown up in Europe, I love bread. It's a must. My favorite is still the Zopf, a braided bread, a bit like Challah. It has sentimental value. Maybe it's because it was eaten on Sundays only and it wasn't crusty. We had that the whole week.

So often when I visit your blog, Ming, I am sure I've landed in another country but then that's one of the many wonders of NYC - it is so cosmopolitan.

Today, of course I thought we were in France. My favourite bread? Wholemeal brread - pain complet in France. Any heavy brown bread I love. Also ficelle - which is a very thin crusty baguettes. Also I love brioche, a sort of milk bread. I just love bread, full stop.

Lovely post as always.

Miam!!! I can dine on this. Actually, anytime I buy a baguette, a few centimeters were already eaten on my way home. I can't help it.

Ah yes indeed Ming.....I do so enjoy nice bread..and all types..Being from the south, we have fresh baked bread at most every meal...either biscuits or cornbread depending on what is being served. I make a lovely winter soup...I must have a nice hard crusty style baguette bread served with it...My favorite bread of all ..a crusty Italian bread with oils and spices for dipping.....Now I am hungry :).....Very nice photo and fun post...

That photo made me salivate!! I love all types of bread. I'm fortunate enough to have the time and inclination to make my own and it's so heavenly fresh from the oven! But, whenever my boys go to visit their grandparents, they will eat entire loaves of Wonder bread, while exclaiming how much they love it!!

I'm like you Ming....the only bread I knew was Wonderbread, until I moved out of my parents home.

The best bread in the world is Poilane. Fairway used to sell it, but not any more.

Mmmmmmm....I love crusty loaves like these, especially when I get to dip them in extra virgin olive oil. Potatoes are my other favourite starch - baked, roasted, mashed....I'm salivating! :o)
