12th Street & University Place

This is the corner of 12th Street and University Place, between NYU (4 blocks south) and Union Square (2 blocks north). It is one of my favorite places to hang out because there are good, inexpensive restaurants and cafes here.

What is the biggest college or university near you?

My thoughts on this photo went immediately to the apartments on the corner. I once lived on the fifth (top) floor of a marvelous place that had been built around 1910, and it still had its antique iceboxes and murphy bed closets and built in cabinetry with "prairie style" stained glass insets and designs. The City of Sacramento tore it down to make a few rich people richer.

I don't think I'd want to live any higher up than five though. The older I get, the weirder I am about man-made heights.

We only have a junior college in Mendocino, but the good news is there is a "satellite" campus of it right here in little Willits, so people can get some basic units in near their home before transferring to a four year school.

In Taiwan, eateries and cafes near uni are known to be inexpensive too. Also a location for good food!

Évry est une ville universitaire, mais on n'a pas de quartier spécifique, pas beaucoup d'étudiants vivent à Évry, ce qui fait que le soir il n'y a plus personne, c'est une immense différence avec les quartiers universitaires New Yorkais.
Evry is a university town, but there is no specific geographic area, not many students live in Evry, so that at night there is nobody, is a huge difference with New neighborhoods university Yorkers.

Could I mention Sorbonne? (Just as an example here.)

Lovely atmosphere in this photo! NYC at its best in my opinion!

Students can stay in Vannes for the two or three first years at the university, if they choose laws or sciences or mathematics, then they have to go in Rennes or Nantes, about one hour by car or train. To study medicine, they have to go immediately in these towns.

I don't know many things in New York, but I see how this area is, because one of my friends lives on 14th street (East), just close to Union Square.

This looks like a terrific neighborhood for the students!

I am near Chicago, so there are a number of excellent colleges and universities nearby, including Northwestern, Northern Illinois and University of Chicago.

The biggest University in Minneapolis/St.Paul to my knowledge, and any Twin-Citian can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is The University of Minnesota.

Great shot here, you can feel the busy-ness of the street! Have a great weekend :)

The University of Tennessee is the 1,000 pound gorilla in the backyard of downtown Knoxville. I didn't know what "Big Orange" or "Go Vols" meant when I first moved here, but I learned quickly! Cumberland Ave (or, "the Strip") is the main commercial street serving UT, but it doesn't have as many cheap eateries as I would expect for a university this large.

Vanderbilt University is, of course, the closest BIG university in Nashville. There are some good places around it, but not many of which I'm aware. This town is a bit different in that respect. . . at least I think. There are probably places closer to the other universities/colleges here (Belmont, Lipscomb, Trevecca, TSU, etc).

London University. Has 90,000 students plus another 45,000 distant learners. Campus is large.

I live in Rennes in France (in the west areas) where there are all the universities Alice talked about in her message.
Medecine and pharmacology University, Laws University, Economics and sciences universities and many private schools for business or environnement. All of these ones are all around and in the town.
There are only 250 000 inhabitants in Rennes but 50 000 of them are students, so there are lots of small restaurants and cafes here.

Great neighborhood college atmosphere! Nearest university for me is UCLA-also my alma mater and grad school. Love the atmosphere on campus. The Village nearby has changed a lot though over the years. Love NYC and your daily posts.

The kids here have to go across to UNI. Biggest college is the imaginatively titled Isle of Man college. You know the sort of place you learn a dead language or basket making! ove this shot. The yellow cab
is iconic around the world, along with building with firescapes. I could show this pic to the most Pig Ignorant Manx person and even they would know it's NY.

I'll have to remember this tip when I'm in NY during mid September this fall. I'll be spending most of my time in NoLita near Bowery and Spring attending a photo workshop.

I live near the main campus of the national university (University of the Philippines) and one of the largest private universities (Ateneo de Manila University). I'm surrounded by academics! My husband being one of them. ;-D

I find the atmosphere both peaceful and energizing, much like this street corner. Tiny restaurants and busy traffic. Love it!

That would be the UEA (university of East Anglia) and its about a 10 minute walk from me. Its the biggest uni in the region and its actually really nice to be so close to it.
Went to see SATC with 6 girlies last night and had so much fun, so glad I got to see it again! Hope your well, missy x

Interesting! Chris and I found an amazingly good and cheap resturaunt in this very area on our last trip. Will certainly hang there again, and it's so close to my favorite area in the city - Union Square (on the weekends only)

Can't wait to get back to NYC man!

Closest university would be Columbia, which is not my favourite place to hang out - no cool restaurants and cafés there. Well, a few. But very little.

I guess it's NYU. I actually walked by that corner a few hours ago.

btw....there are also some VERY expensive restaurants up that block, Gotham Bar and Grill for one.
