Houston and West Broadway

The street along the bottom of the photo is Houston Street and the street where the yellow cab is turning into is West Broadway. SoHo (short for South of Houston Street), a highly desirable shopping district, begins here.

New Yorkers like to give acronyms to the districts in the city like NoHo (North of Houston Street), Nolita (North of Little Italy), Tribeca (Triangle Below Canal Street) and DUMBO (District under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass).

So does your city have an acronym?

Non à Evry, on ne donne pas d'acronymes aux quartiers, on trouve cela (enfin je pense) que dans les grandes villes.

Not in Evry, it gives no acronyms the neighborhoods, find it (well I think) than in large cities.

I have so many similar photos of giant billboards from my last trip to NY, city I love. Here in Belgrade we don't give acronyms to neighborhoods, just names, like the French use Montmartre, for example.

Nice photograph. It looks very busy to me.

Does my city have an acronym?! Bwahahahaha. My city is nothing but an alphabet soup of acronyms thanks to the government. Where to start?

Although, in terms of the neighborhoods themselves, we don't really use acronyms. Probably because everything else gets foreshortened around here.

Great picture! Love the billboard for Delta with the London cab against the reality of a NYC Yellow Cab. Nicely done!

None that I know of, but some of these you named are new to me!

I never knew that was why it was Soho. In LA, NoHo is North Hollywood.

"T.O.," which stands for Toronto, Ontario, but that's not really an acronym, is it? Technically, I think it's an initialism, but I don't think it really matters.

Great photo, Ming! I love this intersection in New York. Whenever I'm there, I feel I'm about to enter the belly of the beast that is SoHo.

In Chicago, at least one developer is trying to create some acronym cachet, dubbing his development just south of North Avenue SoNo. I don't think it's taking. Personally, when I see the signs, I just think, "Ummm, so no."

Me again. I'll be on vacation for two weeks starting tomorrow, so won't be able to visit. (I've used scheduled posting on my blog; hope it works.)

No way, Ho-Zay. We generally have to spell out the whole town name, and even then, have trouble with people getting it wrong.

W-I-L-L-I-T-S. No, two "I"s. Yea...yeah, that's it. Pardon? Uh, about 500 miles north of Los Angeles.

Well, by George, I was in that exact spot in March!

NOVA - Northern Virginia.

The young ones usually give the places acronyms. Like Akihabara - Akiba. Et cetera.

I like that area a lot.

The only acronym I can think of at this time is SOBRO - South of Broadway.

Hey! Do you know any of these four places:
WaterMoon - Asian Art and Antiques
LaStreghe Ristorante (Little Italy)
Lunella (Little Italy)
La Grotta Azura (Little Italy)

I just heard that the area surrounding the Lincoln Tunnel is now called SoHell (South of Hell's Kitchen). That's a new one for me, but I'm sure it's going to be the next "hot" area of Manhattan where warehouses are soon to be converted into million dollar apartments.

How do New Yorkers pronounce Houston? Over here where i live (Singapore), we'd say hew-ston. But i know you guys say it differently.
