Yesterday (Saturday) was the first day of summer. It was also the day for the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island, the stretch of beaches and amusement parks on the southern edge of Brooklyn on the Atlantic Ocean. And here is a collage of the photos from the parade. [Click on the photo to see the large format.]
So what did you do on the first day of summer?

I love the watermelon vikings!
Today, I had a tuna melt at Ardella's, then garden gazed, then did laundry. Hmmm. I'll have to do better next year.
Other answer, a young redwood tree grows quickly, but a redwood forest takes centuries.
What has that girl in the top left corner got on her head?
On the first day of summer I slept so that I would be able to spend the first night of summer strolling through town and snapping photos... ;)
I always LOVE your collages and this one's no different - so happy , bright and colorful!
First day of summer, huh? We are experiencing a very cold winter this year ;o)
I spent the first say of summer melting at work. The AC was out and it was brutally hot.
A couple of mermaids would have made things better.
What a great collage, Ming. Everyone is having such fun, so relaxed. You really captured their moments.
I spent the first day of summer with friends in Ohio. Then we had a massive storm last night, which cleared the humidity. Eating too much...
Apologies for lack of comments recently. I'm in America. But slowly hope to start commenting a little more regularly.
Honkers? I do visit and I do comment and I was here. I did look at your picture(s) and I did read what you wrote about them. I could say how great you are and how beautiful your work is but alas I would soon run out of things to say on the next blog I visited, so I just left this to prove I stopped and said a few words on Sunday.
Began it the night before, enjoying the free concert in Prospect Park, along with 50,000 or so (according to WQXR) of my neighbors and lots of swooping bats at dusk. Missed the Mermaid Parade (;~{ b/c I had to do my shift at the Park Slope Food Coop -- so thanks very much for these great pix!
(Hey, uselaine, you're GF)
This is my kind of festival. I would LOVE to dress up like and parade around like a mermaid. At my age, that might scare some people, though.
First day of summer was a load of fun. . . .We continued cleaning the house in preparation for putting it up for sale. Sigh.
This is such a wonderful blog! Truly inspiring.
Boo hoo Ming. 'Tis not summer down here! I find it interesting that you mark summer by the summer solstice. We are much more prosaic down here and commence on 1st June and cross off three months.
Happy summer to you and yours!
Nice and happy photos, Ming!
Current in São Paulo we have winter... but no much cold. Today was a sunny and a warm day.
I love the mermaid parade pictures - I'm afraid there's going to be a lot of sunburnt mermaids today, though.
Hmm, let's see...for the 1st day of summer I put on my academic regalia to attend graduation at the college where I'm employed, then went out to lunch with the General Studies department, then did errands, then met my sweetie and our neighbor on a restaurant patio for drinks, then attended the Pride Festival on the square, then went to the Bistro to meet friends for a late dinner and catch some cool gypsy jazz music. Then I ran out of Saturday and went home.
Well, you asked. :-)
You don't wanna know. ;) This looks like tons of fun! And the weather was cooperating with the even. Great reportage, Ming.
ma parade préférée de NYC, j'adore voir les photos de cette parade, toute la folie de Coney-Island, c'est sublime. merci pour ce reportage
my favorite NYC parade, I love to see photos of the parade, the folly of Coney Island is sublime. thank you for this report
I've lost track of seasons since they don't pay too much attention here in TW. But I know it's hot! So it must be summer!
The water malon viking hats are a good idea! You should combine the Mermaid Parade with the "Fête de la Musique"! ... or we should in Paris!
Looks like a lot of fun! Great capture!
What a fun looking parade!!
Summer! what is the thing called summer. When we have our first( and probably one day)I'll get back to ya.
Long wait them.
Beautiful composition and colors.
A picture says a thousand words.
Wow. Looks like many of the participants weren't even born when they had the first Mermaid Parade. Shocking!
I know you invited me along, and I'm sorry I missed it.
We were upstate last Saturday, enjoying the lake and weekend BBQ.
