West 10th Street & Hudson

I had dinner with some former co-workers from my old job yesterday. We stopped over at a friend's rooftop apartment in the West Village for drinks before heading out to dinner and this was the view from the top.

This view faces northeast towards midtown. The street on the left is West 10th and the one on the top is Hudson Street. In the top left corner, you can see the Empire State Building, which is located on 34th Street and Lexington Avenue.

So have you ever had a rooftop party?

No, I've never had a rooftop party, you're lucky and you live in NYC!

City living is different. I remember living in Baltimore, Maryland in the mid 1950s and found it awful hot and humid and sultry most of the time. All, except people in your neighborhood and those were really nice and kind people. It was when we got into another neighborhood that things were totally different.

It kind of sickened us on big city living and at the time I thought all large cities were pretty much the same. New York City is so big and in my lifetime I have seen so many horror stories about it that I formed an opinion and was never there. So my ideas are or were influenced by things I heard and saw. Which is not the way one should judge an

I love this shot because I'm pleasantly surprised to see so much green in the streetscape. I've been to rooftop parties in downtown Knoxville. Suburbs, no - it's kinda hard to hold onto your chips'n'dip on a slanted roof, lol!

I've never hosted any, but you have brought back memories of some I have attended in various cities, which I haven't thought of for years - Sacramento, Berkeley, Budapest. I guess Las Vegas wouldn't count, because it was a public restaurant. Thanks!

Nice shot, Ming. It looks like the weather was perfect for a rooftop party.

We have been to rooftop parties in Las Vegas, and last fall, we had drinks on a rooftop in Barcelona at sunset. I enjoyed all of them and love people watching from that vantage point.

Just noticed a little boo-boo here: the ESB is on E34th and Fifth Avenue (not Lex).

Not had or been to a rooftop party per se, but my wife and I used to slip up onto the roof of our Chicago apartment building sometimes to drink wine and gaze out over our city. And when I stayed with a friend in Brooklyn and found out her building had a deck, I got up there every night with a glass of wine. She said no one ever went up there, and she was right--I always had it to myself. A crime, I think, in a city where private outdoor space is at such a premium.

That is one of my favorite corners in Manhattan. Our friend Scott works at Citi-Habitats on the southwest corner and is part owner of Voyage up the block.

My building has a rooftop garden and every July 4th we have a party with music, food and drinks while watching the fireworks....it's a lot of fun.
