Purple Carrots, White Carrots, Yellow Carrots!

I saw this at the Green Market at Union Square this past weekend -- purple carrots, white carrots and yellow carrots (not seen in this photo) displayed along the regular red carrots. I did not know carrots come in these rainbow of colors. I thought all carrots are red. I guess I was wrong.

So what did you learn this weekend?

Hi Ming...now the carrots are more to my liking :) I've never seen these colors...interesting..hmmmm

You could put the different colored carrots in a blender and have purple carrot juice , white and orange :)

I learned that by seeing a luscious picture of beautiful carrots, I am compelled to go to my refrigerator and extract carrots (orange ones) to eat. You have a healthy influence on me, Ming.

I knew about the carrots. Wow! I like the purple ones. The white ones are too close to the ones that get fed to the cows (color only, size is different).

I learned the meaning of *serendipitous* this weekend and that the peacock is the national bird of India. There must be more but I forgot.

hey hey you forgot the other kind of carrots. carrot cakes in Asia :-)

Hi Ming! Finally I found some time to enjoy your excellent blog…
Carrots? I would prefer aspargus... ;)
Discrete photographer at the body art performance... ;))
The Unisphere looks great, but the urban valley is absolutely gorgeous!
Finally, was amazed to find that canal in Brooklyn; actually, the only Canal I knew in NYC was the selling-fake-brands-street... ;)
Many thanks for your comments on Blogtrotter, now with the second and last post on the MoMA! Hope you enjoy and wish you a great week and a nice holiday, in case you have the chance to profit from it! ;))

I learned that you are color blind- LOL. Regular carrots are orange, Ming, at least down here in Alabama they are. Wait, maybe regular NYC carrots come in that chic dark red color. Yep, bet that's it. Great photo too!

That's a lot of non-green colors for a green market. I like how the carrots are in generous heaps on the counter. Such abundance to be grateful for.
I learned that there are white eggplants. I also learned that they taste the same as purple ones but don't look as pretty in a stir fry.

Interesting. . . .I have seen asparagus in colors, too - white, purple and green.

What did I learn this weekend? I learned that I am SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT BRETT FAVRE. Good GRIEF!! WHO CARES? Can we move on, people?

I learned what fun it is having friends to stay. Well I knew it anyway, but it was emphasized. And I just learned that you can get purple and white carrots. how about that then?!

That's a new one on me. I'll start paying more attention at the grocery store but I don't t think we have those. I wonder if the non-traditional colours have equal nutritional value. I think it's safe to say they don't have beta carotene.
Good as a garnish but that's a lot of garnish.

OK Ming, but where are the rabbits?

Very colourful. If you eat all these you'll be able to see in colour in the dark!

I think you painted them...

I thought carrots were orange, not red????

It's all to do with the Netherlands and the house of Orange, the Dutch Royals why the orange carrot beacame the most popular in the West. They don't help you much better than any other veg to see in the dark either. These myth was started by in WW2 to get people to consume them as they were homegrown and cheap.

I learnt to play poker.

I don't know Ming.... those purple carrots look weird. Did you sample?

I went to a Fireman's parade.... you can read all about it on my blog.

i recently bought my toddler daughter some wooden "market"/"food" toys. one of them came in the shape of a carrot, but the colour is white. my husband and i were arguing whether it's a turnip (i said) or white carrot (he said). and i told him that there was no such thing as a white carrot! i guess i'm wrong!

I always go for the classic orange carots but those are cute. I should try!

hehe r u sure those white carrots ain't turnips? ;p

I thought the white ones would be turnips, and perhaps the purple ones are beetroots.

I've never seen either of the two in France. I am flabbergasted. I'd like to know how they're done.

I'm with you there. Purple carrots seem so strange and cool and Dr. Seuss-ish!

Until recently, I didn't know that carrots came in various colors. The great thing is that they all have different nutrients good for us. I have an awesome recipe for them -- roasted. ;-)

I know they bury chives underground so that there are white chives. Then I knew the difference btw green and white chives :P Perhaps the white carrots use the same "logic" ?

hmm...white & purple carrots. I can't say I've ever seen those before. I'm sure they make for a very colourful salad! :-)

I wonder if they all taste different, and who looked at an orange carrot and said, "I want to turn that white, yellow and purple!" ?
