Pepsi-Cola Sign

This Pepsi-Cola sign is what was left of a Pepsi bottling plant in Long Island City, Queens. The gigantic metal structure has gained such an iconic status in the area that earlier talks of moving the sign elsewhere caused quite a huge uproar among the local residents. For now, it stays where it is supposed to be.

So does your city have an iconic structure that represents it?

Take your pick... the Washington Monument, the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Kennedy Center...

Hey, does that light up at night? If so, would LOVE to see a picture of it!

I always liked seeing the Silver Cup sign as I drove over the 59th street bridge from Manhattan into Queens.

I love this shot! Our "icon" is probably the Willits Arch. Hey, it's more than some small cities have.

Another one of your great photos that make me feel "so there"!

I don't like Pepsi, but that sign ought to stay just where it always has been.

I'm with b 13 the SilverCup Bakery sign is also a fabulous Icon.

Yeah, I know it says "studios" now.

Really liked this photograph, Ming.
Very sweet!

That sign has been there a LONG time. I remember it from the 50s - we would see it when the family was returning to Queens by either the bridge or the tunnel, or from the area around the UN.

Our iconic structure is obvious, I suppose. How many Thursday pictures have I posted of it by now? Certainly in high two digits.

Boston has a Citco sign that everyone navigates with. It's like a beacon, calling you home. I wonder if the residents of Long Island City feel that way about this sign.

I've seen this sign many times on trips to NY. It makes me think of a couple of businesses here in Phoenix that have taken advantage of a former tenants signage. Near me is a restaurant where a florist shop used to be. Above that florest shop was a huge lighted sign that is no longer permissable by city code. However, since the sign is grandfathered, the restaurant owners named their place the same as the florist and kept the sign. Someday I'll put a photo of it on my site.

I don't think I have ever seen it from this angle. Cool. Is it an old picture or are the trees already so brown?
