GROM Il Gelato Come Una Volta

Italian gelato brand, GROM il gelato come una volta from Turin has opened two stores in NYC -- one on the Upper West Side and this one in the photo, in Greenwich Village. I walked by the store last weekend but did not get a chance to taste the gelati. I will definitely stop in the next time I'm in the area.

So how is ice-cream different from gelato? Will you be able to taste the difference?

Italian gelati are yummy !

I thought ice-cream was just the translation of gelato. No?
Surely I can tell if a gelato is good, good good, or bad!

I took a look at Grom's web site. That looks really nice, the real gelato made with fresh ingredients.

Such a great action shot with the bright cabs perfectly spaced! Confession: Never had gelato! Eeewwwww, i feel like such a bumpkin. I promise to find some soon and I"ll get back with you. I hear it's delicious. Does that count????

I can't believe you walked by that place, Ming.

Gelato is easily discernible from Ice ceram because of the difference in butterfat content. When I managed Gelato Modo waaaaaay back in the early 80's, gelato was only allowed 10% fat content. At the time Haagen Dazs was something like 15%.

Damn I love this place. You make me homesick!!

I don't think I have ever tasted true Italian gelato... one of life's little pleasures that has passed me by so far. I'll have to remedy that.

I thought this might be related to Volta that I had in Buenes Aires, but I checked the link you included and it doesn't look like the same company. I bet they have great gelato.

I'm blushing!

As Valeria said ice-cream and gelato are the same. But perhaps we are not expert enough!

Tremendous images. I've included your blog in a recent posting "20 Awesome Photoblogs - New York City". Check it out when you have a moment. Best of luck and keep up the great work!

My son & I ate at this place. I thought it was delicious, but pricey. Compared to regular ice cream the ingredients somehow taste more natural to me. I had one of their chocolate flavors & it was very rich, almost too filling, though still superb.

Ming, I knew it! I drop in after a while away and what do I find? More gourmet stuff!

BTW....I rather like the stage set snap. You can't beat a good show. I was once lucky enough to see Guys and Dolls on Broadway. Have you ever made it to the London theatre scene?

Ming...I left a comment butit may have disappeared.

Anyway nice shot & I liked the stage one too.

haha at what Todd said, i completely can see myself in such a situation too.

gelato is alot lighter compared to ice cream in my opinion. makes me feel like i'm not consuming as much cream, haha but that's just my assumption.

this store looks really upmarket and expensive, i'm getting tired of increasingly expensive food out there.

Perhaps a visit might be in order next Monday evening after dinner? Assuming it's not too far off the path away from Grand and Mulberry ...

I think gelato is made from milk and ice cream is with cream. Love em both anyway.

Absolutely, you can immediately taste the difference. Gelato is less heavy - like Lisa described. It is usually artisanal and tastier.
This place is huge compared to the little store they have up here. You have to stop and try. Yes, it is not cheap but I'd much rather have one there than 3 elsewhere.

I have never eaten the gelato at Grom because whenever I've visited the line reaches way down the block. Sorry, but I'm not going to wait that long just for a tiny cup of gelato. Or, thinking of those people who wilt in the sun waiting for a cup from Pinkberry, for frozen yogurt, either.

i cannot believe this, i happened to live near one of the grom stores in italy for a couple of years (there is 2 of them, one in Padova, one in Mestre - both towns near Venice).
the ice cream is good, though, quite expensive, and not the most typical italian ice-cream, i would say.
but it's worth a try.

my favorites: nougat, chockolate (it comes in different versions, try extra dark!!), and apple.

be careful with the flavour of the month....

ps. i thought ice-cream & gelato were the same thing....?
