Neil's Coffee Shop

This was where I had breakfast recently -- Neil's Coffee Shop on Lexington Avenue and 70th Street on the Upper East Side. Old style diners like this are slowly being shuttered to make place for new fancy ones . I sat by the window and saw the neon lights next to the street signs so I quickly took the photo before my breakfast arrived.

So what did you have for breakfast?

As a student at nearby hunter college, I ate there once.

I had coffee and a single donut for breakfast.

That's a wonderful shot. I like seeing the street context with it. I've heard that's a pretty nice area.

Only coffee, this morning. I should do better.

Pity to lose these old establishments... My breakfast? Do you really want to know? Four corn cakes, spread with peanut butter and organic marmalade, chased down with hot English Breakfast tea with milk and honey!

Ah ... Grapenuts with raisins and milk then heated in the microwave for 32 seconds. This is my normal but frequently alternated with fresh oatmeal, typically the steel-cut variety with butter, brown sugar, raisins, walnuts and milk. And coffee, of course, but once in awhile I'll make espresso or sometimes a pot of tea.

TMI - I know :)

I've eaten there! Used to live about 10 blocks away. When I lived in NYC, I loved going to all the old diners - they really have so much character. There are still some goodies but you are right, a dying breed.

oh, i had my son's toast and his yogurt for breakfast as he left it on table before school - that boy needs to eat more! And a big pot of Colombian coffee with half and half cream.....

Nice photo, Ming!

I always have juice of apple with orange and papaya from breakfast. And also coffee with milk and cheese (white cheese).

that is a great angle, let me add. I would have just dumbly shot the sign, but you got more character in!

I've passed by this place several times but never stopped in. Will do so next time.

Love that poicture, it says New York to me.
My breakfast today was one slice of toast with home made strawberry jam, and one glass of orange juice.
But The Space Cadet always had bacon, tomato, and one egg with his toast.

Um, and for breakfast: oatmeal with frozen berries mixed in (thawed by the time I eat them). It's my one healthy meal of the day. :)

I've been having the same breakfast for the past two years....a muffin and 10 berries.

Ooooh...I hope they don't shut down all the old diners - they epitomise New York. So much of the city's character would be lost without them.

I loved Prime Burger in Midtown (for its atmosphere rather than its food) and Nathan and I still talk about the Washington Square Diner you took us to - the biggest caesar salad I've ever seen! ;o)
