Prince & Elizabeth

I took this photo primarily as an archiving tool to remind myself later where I was when I took the other photos. And interestingly enough, this photo turned out quite nicely. I especially like the colors and classic New York street scene.

So how do you archive your photos? Do you have a special way of naming your files or do you immediately delete the photos you don't like?

I have over 240 folders on my laptop from the 2+ years of taking photos for this blog. It has taken up a lot of space on my hard drive and I need to go back and delete most of the bad photos.

I like this photo too!
But do you back it all up on an external hard drive, or disks, or whatever, Ming? Am currently dealing with these issues, and going back to delete, delete, delete the extraneous stuff (doing it immediately would be smarter, no doubt).

Alexa - Yes, I do have an external hard drive that I back up my office and home laptop every 3-4 months or so.

I am much better at deleting 'bad' photos now than I was when I started. Plus I frequently take multiple frames of the same scene so I do delete those all the time.

This photo does indeed look like a perfect representation of NYC.
I am in the process of deleting all my "bad" photos & organizing the keepers in files. I'm getting them ready to put on the E.H. & ideally I'd like to be doubly safe & back them up on discs too.

Great shot. I like finding "tags" to help me remember where I was when I took the photograph.

I also organize mine in folders and save in Adobe and Picassa on the desktop. I back everything up on an EHD. Not very good at deleting the bad shots. Hope your blog friends will have more ideas.

Well, I go through straight away and delete any obvious duds. I have heaps of folders, but one lablled "Daily Photo" which has sub-folders: "To Consider"; "Draft" (once uploaded to Blogger in Draft form but not yet published); "Published", and finally "Don't Use-Used Similar" (photos I like but I used an alternate one). And a few kicking around in the top folder I haven't decided what to do with yet.

Within "Published" I file in chron order as follows for example: 2009 03March 27 Going home. That ensures all photos come up in chron order and I have the name I gave the post.

I thn back it all up on an external hard drive every so often.

Nice shot, btw. I also take street signs occasionally to remind me where I was. Ah, the beauty of digital!

well Sally blew me away. I'm nearly that organized. I need to take more archive photos more like this one today. I don't have trouble remembering around here but in Paris I'll need to do it for sure. I have about 20 albums in Iphoto. Just deleted about 1,000 shots this week. Mainly duplicates. Guess what? I needed one of those 1.000 for my post today. C'est la vie. I have just gotten an EHD since a friend of mine lost ALL of the photos in his IPHOTO library recently! Lord have mercy!

Nice .. I like the signs and the awnings and fire escapes all at nice angles to one another ...

When I download from my camera I weed out the not so hot shots immediately tho I do tend to keep a lot of shots I really dont need or are sort of dupes of others or just not so great for way too long .. I back up onto a stand-alone hard drive once a week with Apple's Time Machine and I never ever delete anything before I back up .. with Time Machine you can retrieve deleted items months later ...

Hi Ming! Sorry for the absence! It has been hard to get some free time... ;)
240 folders, that's much more than I have for my 10G, 40 year photos... But I've three backup alternatives... ;))
Great murals!!
The persistence of memory is wonderful!

Now, «The Masterpiece» waits you and your comments at Blogtrotter. You shouldn’t miss it, believe me... ;). Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Reminds me of Ken Mac's vanishing Newy York images. Classic image of a scene that may one day look so very different.Buzzing with colour and energy. I have everything backed up for work. I delete as I go along. Arhciving? I should really tell you as a professional my images are filed in a properly named image library but Nah! I have a hundred names for puddles alone, and most images are named after films, books and songs. I'll remember, "Dark Side of the Moon", better than Lunar eclipse no3 dc28agse. Wouldn't you.

Can't make it much more typically NYC! These simple street signs are all you need! :-)

Don't talk to me about photo files..., it's the weekend now!

The photo is INDEED nice, Ming!
My previous laptop almost died because it was totally engulfed by my photos.
With this new one, I am trying to behave better, but...
I tend to keep all the photos, while there would be so MANY to delete at first sight. Yes, that's what I should begin to do. The good ones go into the VeronaDP folder!

Nice signs, just says New York.

I tend to just label photos by month. If I visit somewhere out of town then I label it accordingly. Not a very complex way but it seems to work for me :)

Ming -- you asked me a question the other day about dim sum in Flushing. The answer is yes, that's the place. (We should go there sometime!)

Hi Ming,

All my images are renamed as they move from camera to computer (d20090401-001r) where d=digital (as opposed to a scan which would have an "sc" prefix) and the trailing "r" tells me it is a raw file.

Each day's shoot is stored in a folder with the day's date (20090401) and that inside a year folder.

All images will receive at least rudimentary caption and keyword information, so when searching I can locate in my database.

I use PhotoMechanic to ingest, caption and keyword, and Expression Media 2 for database.

All files are saved to two identical hard drives, so there is an exact duplicate should one of the drives fail.

Hope that helps ... I enjoyed my week in this neighborhood last fall, btw, but you already knew that -:)

My computer filled to the brim last time I uploaded photos to it...it was screaming at me and throwing up bright red messages...not a pretty sight. I've deleted quite a few off it after transferring them...firstly to disks but now I'm starting to use USB sticks to store them, you can store so many more photos on them, and they take up less room!

Lately my computer has been fighting back, saying if I rename a photo it'll become unusable...and it's right. If I rename them, they practically delete themselves.
