Mid-Month Subway Theme Day

It is mid-month subway theme day again. This photo was taken at the Times Square/42nd Street subway station. The station is one of the biggest and busiest in the city with connecting lines for the N, W, R, Q, 1, 2, 3, 7 and 9 subway trains. It is also adjacent to the New Jersey PATH stations (subway service to New Jersey) and a block from the Amtrak tand other regional train services at Pennsylvania Station.

Mid-Month Subway Theme

This is one of the subway entrances to the B, D, F, V and 7 trains at Bryant Park on 42nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. The white tents in the background are where the New York Fashion Week shows are being held this week.

Broadway Shows

Here are some of the Broadway shows that are playing in New York City right now. Musicals appear to be more popular than dramas. Lately, there has been a lot of Disney-fication on Broadway with more and more movie-themed shows coming to town, like The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins and Grease.

Recently, I was invited by a new friend from California to see South Pacific with her at the Lincoln Center. The production was spectacular and I really enjoyed it.

So what shows have you seen lately?

No Lines at TKTS

This is the line to the new TKTS booths that sell discounted Broadway tickets for same day shows only. The reason there was is no line here is because this photo was taken at about 10 AM in the morning and it was really, really cold.

So when was the last time you waited in a line to purchase something?

Ice Rink @ Bryant Park

This is The Pond at Bryant Park, an free ice skating rink on 42nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. It is one of three ice skating rinks in the city -- the other two are at the Rockefeller Center and Central Park.

So when was the last time you ice skated?

Pride Parade 2008

The New York City Pride Parade was held yesterday with a march down 5th Avenue from midtown Manhattan to the Greenwich Village. The annual parade usually attracts hundreds of organizations and thousands of marchers who participate in various events throughout the week. It is estimated that half a million tourists come to the city for this event.

This photo above shows employees of Google marching down 5th Avenue in front of the New York City Public Library on 42nd Street carrying the rainbow colors of Google's icon, which also happen to be the color of the festival.

So what did you do this weekend?

Thorn in Lion's Paw

This statue of a lion is one of two giant structures that sits in front of the New York City Public Library on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. Instead of taking the regular head-on shot or side profile of the lion, I decided to take the photo from beneath the pedestal it was sitting on. When I got home and looked at the photo, it reminded me of the fairy tale of the lion with a thorn in his paw.

So what is your favorite fairy tale?

Mistress Row or Park Avenue South

This is Park Avenue South, which is a stretch of street south of 42nd Street near Grand Central Station. The area is sometimes called Mistress Row because of the number of apartments (those colorful buildings in the background) that are rented out to pretty young girls and paid for by their gentleman friends. The reason Park Avenue South is a popular spot for that purpose is its proximity to Grand Central Station. New York Times did a story on this phenomenon entitled, Dangerous Liaison: the Perils of Pied-Affaire. It is a fun read if you are really in the mood for some NYC gossips.

In the photo, you can see the ramp going up to the bridge that was in yesterday's photo. You can also see part of the Pershing Square Restaurant on the lower right corner.

I am NOT going to ask if you ever had an affair so maybe you can tell me (and the readers) something interesting about yourself that is PG-rated.

Pershing Square Restaurant

Here is the Pershing Square Restaurant that is under the bridge in yesterday's photo and located across 42nd Street from Grand Central Station. The front of the restaurant (in this photo) may look like a greasy diner from the outside but there is a beautiful dining space inside. But if you prefer to hang out and get something to drink, it has great outdoor seatings at the corner too.

I used to work on Park Avenue and this was a favorite place to meet up with friends after work. A lot of New York commuters who work in city and live in the suburbs of Long Island or upstate New York come here to relax before taking the trian home at the Grand Central Station. Pershing Square at Grand Central Station

Pershing Square is small section of space outside the Grand Central Station on East 42nd Street (below) and Park Avenue (overpass bridge). Under the bridge is a restaurant called Pershing Square Restaurant where many commuters stop to relax before getting on the trian home.
